【International Archives Week】

【漫遊巴士路線】85號巴士遊 🚌

上星期回顧咗筲箕灣明華大廈嘅歷史，今次講吓港島東居民相當熟悉、目前唯一行經整條阿公岩道嘅巴士線—85號巴士。

85號巴士喺1978年投入服務，最初往返北角碼頭同阿公岩村道，途經筲箕灣、西灣河、太古城同鰂魚涌，大大方便咗明華大廈一帶居民嘅出入。

一份1979年前工務司署交通運輸調查部嘅館藏檔案，記錄咗當年85號巴士嘅行車路線同沿途景色，當中可以見到唔少東區地標：包括依山而建嘅明華大廈、剛剛入伙嘅太古城，仲有由益發大廈、海山樓、福昌樓等五座相鄰大廈組成、現時有「怪獸大廈」之稱嘅密集建築群。除咗建築物，相片仲捕捉到當年街頭嘅人物百態，好似西裝骨骨嘅上班族、三五成群嘅學生哥、湊住細路嘅街坊等。

物換星移，今日嘅85號巴士路線已經延伸至杏花邨、柴灣同小西灣，以循環線形式運作，服務更多東區居民，繼續見證社區嘅變遷。

【Exploring Bus Routes】Bus Route No. 85 Journey 🚌

Last week we looked back at the history of Ming Wah Dai Ha in Shau Kei Wan. Today, let's talk about a bus route that is very familiar to many residents of eastern Hong Kong Island: bus Route No. 85, which currently runs along the entire length of A Kung Ngam Road.

The Route No.85 began operating in 1978, initially running between North Point Ferry Pier and A Kung Ngam Village Road. Along the way, it passed through Shau Kei Wan, Sai Wan Ho, Tai Koo Shing and Quarry Bay, greatly improving accessibility for residents living around Ming Wah Dai Ha.

A 1979 archival record from the Traffic and Transport Survey Division of the then Public Works Department documented the bus route and the scenery along its path. You can spot many Eastern District landmarks in the old photos, including Ming Wah Dai Ha built along the hillside, Taikoo Shing that had just been completed, and the dense building cluster made up of five adjacent buildings including Yick Fat Building, Montane Mansion, Fok Cheong Building and others, now famously known as the "Monster Building". Beyond architecture, the photos also portrayed everyday street life: suited commuters, groups of students, and neighbours carrying their little ones.

Decades have passed, Route No. 85 has been extended to Heng Fa Chuen, Chai Wan and Siu Sai Wan now. It currently operates as a circular route, serving more residents in the Eastern District and continuing to bear witness to the transformation of the community.

【漫遊屋邨】明華大廈

筲箕灣明華大廈由13座大廈組成。由於依山而建、地盤面積大，喺六十年代嚟講，建築難度相當高，因此香港房屋協會決定分兩期興建。明華大廈自1962年起陸續落成，合共提供約3,000個單位。今日，就等我哋透過館藏資料，一齊回顧呢個屋邨喺建築初期嘅點滴。

五六十年代，筲箕灣有唔少基層家庭居住環境欠佳。明華大廈嘅落成，為佢哋帶嚟改善居住環境嘅機會。屋邨大部分單位設有獨立廚廁，每戶有大窗採光，部分仲有露台。加上屋邨鄰近街市同筲箕灣電車總站，無論買餸定返工都非常方便，成為好多居民心目中嘅安樂窩。

建築設計方面，明華大廈以八至十層高嘅長型樓宇為主。為咗提升通風同採光，建築師特別採用改良版嘅「中央走廊」設計，走廊兩側設有貫通頂層至地面嘅採光天井。晴天時，日光灑落天井，令每一層都通透光猛；落雨時，家家戶戶門前嘅天井形成一幅幅雨簾，成為屋邨獨有嘅風景。

歲月流轉，樓齡逾六十年嘅明華大廈亦逐漸老去。香港房屋協會喺2011年起分三期重建明華大廈，第一期重建工程已經喺2021年竣工，現正展開第二期重建項目。呢個見證筲箕灣社區變遷嘅屋邨，將逐步換上新面貌，繼續為市民提供宜居嘅家。

【A Stroll Around the Estates】Ming Wah Dai Ha

Ming Wah Dai Ha in Shau Kei Wan consists of 13 blocks. Building it along the hillside on an expansive site in the 1960s was no easy task, which is why the Hong Kong Housing Society developed the estate in two phases. Completed in stages from 1962, Ming Wah Dai Ha provided around 3,000 units in total. Today, let’s look back at the estate’s early days through our holdings.

In the 1950s and 60s, many low-income families in Shau Kei Wan lived in poor conditions. Ming Wah Dai Ha offered them a fresh start in the form of a better living environment. Most units came with private kitchens and toilets, and every household had large windows for natural light, and some even had balconies. With the wet market and the Shau Kei Wan tram terminus nearby, daily shopping and commuting were very convenient. For many, it truly became "home sweet home".

Architecturally, Ming Wah Dai Ha consists mainly of long, eight-to-ten-storey buildings. To boost airflow and light, the architect applied a modified "central corridor" design. Large air wells run from the roof down to the ground on both sides of the corridor. On sunny days, sunlight pours in, making the corridors bright and airy. When it rains, these wells in front of every doorway create "rain curtains". This was a unique sight for this estate.

Over the years, the 60-year-old Ming Wah Dai Ha began to show its age. The Hong Kong Housing Society commenced the redevelopment of the estate by 3 phases in 2011. Phases 1 was completed in 2021, while Phase 2 is currently underway. Having witnessed the transformation of the Shau Kei Wan community, this estate is gradually taking on a new look in order to continue providing comfortable homes for the neighbourhood.
