“Strengthening 𝗘𝗨-𝗔𝗦𝗘𝗔𝗡 𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 and unlocking new economic pathways were the core focus of our EU-ASEAN interesting joint meeting in Macao.

We were honoured to welcome Wong Sio Chak, Macao’s Secretary for Administration and Justice, as our keynote speaker. He delivered a detailed speech highlighting Macao’s economic diversification vision, and the collaborative potential within the Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin.

The EU-ASEAN luncheon meeting featured insightful perspectives from the heads of both the EU and ASEAN Chambers of Commerce. Macao is positioning itself as a vital gateway for global business. Very important that it embraces its uniqueness and fosters an open society underpinned by the rule of law. Thank you to all the speakers and participants who made this impactful exchange possible. The synergy between European and Southeast Asian markets has never been stronger.”

Celebrating in Macao 🙂

"Every year on 9 May, we celebrate the historic achievement that is the European Union 🇪🇺 and the values underpinning our union: peace, cooperation, the rule of law, human rights and democracy. Today, my Office celebrated the Europe Day in Macao 🇲🇴 with a diplomatic reception in the presence of Secretary for Administration and Justice Wong Sio Chak at the beautiful and historical venue Clube Militar!

In my opening remarks, I emphasised that Europe Day highlights the EU’s vitality and countless strengths. We are the world’s second-largest economy, largest single market and largest trading bloc. Very importantly, in an increasingly volatile world, the EU stands as a reliable and predictable partner. Indeed we are proud to be the primary trading partner for over 80 countries worldwide. These qualities also define our close, deep and broad ties with Macao: Last year the EU was Macao’s second-largest trading partner in goods, accounting for 26.0% of Macao’s total trade, just behind mainland China which accounted for 29%. And EU companies are active everywhere - in hospitality, food & beverage, retail, banking, financial services, and the legal sector.

As EU and Macao share ambitious targets for climate change mitigation and EU companies are global leaders in green finance, clean energy, sustainable infrastructure and mobility, and effective waste management – the EU is committed to supporting Macao’s transition to decarbonised economy. We are also seeking to foster our people-to-people exchanges and to support an open and vibrant society!

I also stressed: The EU remains a staunch supporter of the rules-based international order which has underpinned peace, stability & prosperity for decades, including in Asia. Russia’s brutal, unprovoked and illegal full-scale invasion is a flagrant violation of the UN Charter. The EU is the largest supporter of Ukraine and leads sanctions to weaken Russia’s war machine. Our support is unwavering. However, sanctions circumvention remains a significant concern.

My colleagues and I were delighted to welcome over 200 distinguished guests from politics, diplomacy, business & civil society to this memorable evening. A warm thank you to the EU Member States Consulates-General, our generous sponsors, and Clube Militar for making the reception 2026 in Macao such a resounding success! "

***
What is the true cost of sanctions for Russia? Plummeting oil and gas revenues (with Iran war windfalls offering temporary relief, not structural recovery), punishingly expensive borrowing, and the loss of key markets.

It is becoming increasingly difficult for the Kremlin to finance the war against Ukraine. Staying the course delivers results. Sanctions work.

"“𝐖𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐛𝐨𝐭𝐭𝐥𝐞𝐝 𝐩𝐨𝐞𝐭𝐫𝐲”, Robert Louis Stevenson

𝐕𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐨 is unsurprisingly a very popular occasion in Hong Kong😊! I was certainly delighted to be invited to participate in the opening ceremony officiated by Acting Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development Bernard Chan and CEO Comexposium Rodolphe Lameyse. It was also great to visit the EU co-funded European Garnacha/Grenache Quality Wines supported by the passionate Carolina de Funes & Éric Aracil bringing together The Asociación Garnacha Origen and the Conseil Interprofessionnel des Vins du Roussillon (CIVR) .

The EU 🇪🇺 is:
✅ The 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝-𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐞 accounting for over 40% of global wine-growing areas, over 60% of production and nearly half of consumption
✅ Wine is the 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐫𝐝 𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐄𝐔 𝐚𝐠𝐫𝐢-𝐟𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐬𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫 in terms of exports
✅ EU wines account for 𝐭𝐰𝐨-𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐫𝐝𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐠𝐥𝐨𝐛𝐚𝐥 𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐞 𝐛𝐲 𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐞

The wine sector plays a vital role in the EU agri-food sector, supporting rural areas, both socially and economically and contributes to the conservation of the European cultural heritage and landscapes. The EU will continue to support this important sector, especially

📌aligning wine production with a 𝐝𝐞𝐜𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐟𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐝𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐝
📌boosting 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫'𝐬 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 to market and climate challenges, and
📌and 𝐚𝐝𝐚𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐮𝐦𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐬 in the EU and globally

Hong Kong 🇭🇰 is globally recognised as the No. 1 hub for fine wine auctions and the premier gateway for the Asian wine trade. Hong Kongers love ❤️ EU wine - And the EU will continue to work closely with Hong Kong in fostering the wine trade and enriching further the finest bottled poetry!"

"As Hon Chairman of the Macau European Chamber of Commerce (MECC), it was a great honour to be one of the keynote speakers at the “𝟭𝟮𝘁𝗵 𝗠𝗘𝗖𝗖 𝗚𝗮𝗹𝗮 𝗗𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗿 - 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗘𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗲𝘀 - 𝗼𝗳 𝗠𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀, 𝗠𝘆𝘁𝗵𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗠𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗱𝗶𝗲𝘀” at the beautiful Grand Pavilion, Grand Lisboa Palace Resort Macau! Together with Sam Lei, Executive Director of the Board of Directors at the Commerce and Investment Promotion Institute, outstanding leaders from business, diplomacy, government, academia, and the arts from Macao, we celebrated the strong ties between Macao and the European business community.

In my opening remarks, I highlighted that in an increasingly uncertain world we need, first of all, partners on whom we can rely. The European Union 🇪🇺 is such a partner. The EU continues to stand for a rules-based international order anchored in the principles enshrined in the United Nations Charter. The EU is an important partner of Macao 🇲🇴, ranking as the SAR’s second-largest trading partner in goods (after mainland China) and third-largest source of foreign direct investment (after mainland China and Hong Kong SAR).

European companies continue to contribute across key sectors of 🇲🇴 economy — from retail and banking to technology, infrastructure, and sustainability. They are ready too to support and contribute to Macao’s economic diversification.

The EU 🇪🇺 will continue to support and contribute to Macao’s unique character and its historic attractiveness vis-a-vis confidence in the rule of law and the city’s open and international society. My Office will continue to work closely with MECC, the Macao authorities, and all stakeholders to foster further EU-Macao cooperation!

A special thank you to Echo Chan, President of Macau European Chamber of Commerce (MECC) for the kind invitation to this celebration of East-West dialogue, innovation, and cultural excellence! "

Over four years since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. What was meant to weaken Europe strengthened our unity. Ukraine stands firm. Europe stands with Ukraine. Russia’s aggression was a strategic miscalculation and our support to Ukraine remains steadfast. The path to peace is clear: intensifying pressure on Russia while increasing support for Ukraine.

Russia has been portraying the EU and Ukraine’s leadership as “warmongers” unwilling to end the war. This is, of course, an outright lie.

In reality, it is the Kremlin that has rejected at least seven peace proposals in 2025 alone.

In 2026, the Russian economy is in trouble. War-driven growth is losing momentum, sanctions are tightening, financial reserves are shrinking, and uncertainty is increasingly shaping everyday life. What for a while looked like resilience is proving to be fragile, as the economic costs of the war spread beyond the battlefield.

Russia launched massive attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, leaving the Ukrainian people to endure harsh winter conditions. The EU and its Member States stood with Ukraine during this time, providing emergency winter support to keep cities lit and homes warm. The EU has supported Ukraine through every winter of the war and is already preparing for the next one.
