【T．TIPS 源．識】會「自癒」的新型「真菌磚」？

之前我們跟大家分享過「蘑菇大樓」，發現蘑菇內的「菌絲體」具有成為建築材料的潛力。除了把真菌當作材料，大家知道它還可以與「活細菌」混合，變成具備自我修復功能的新型減碳建材嗎？

直至今日，混凝土仍是最主要的建築材料，但其生產過程導致高達全球 8% 的二氧化碳排放量。面對如此龐大的碳足跡，尋求更環保的永續材料刻不容緩！

早前有美國大學研究人員發現一種由真菌和細菌製成的「菌磚」，有望在未來取代高碳建材。將能產生碳酸鈣的細菌注入緻密的菌絲體中，細菌通過生物礦化過程，會令原本黏稠柔韌的菌絲體硬化，形成更堅固的「骨狀結構」。在此結構下，細菌能維持活性並賦予建材自我修復、環境感測等特性，目前能存活至少一個月，未來更有望延長至數年之久。

雖然新材料的發展目前還未能與傳統混凝土相提並論，但「活建築」的減碳潛力絕對不容小覷。 隨著科技飛速發展，未來的綠色城市或許就是由這些會呼吸、自癒的建築組成！

【T．TIPS】“Self-healing” Bio-Brick?

We’ve previously shared the "Mushroom Building" and how "mycelium" has the potential to become a building material. Besides using fungi as a material, do you know they can be mixed with "living bacteria" to create a new type of low-carbon building material with self-healing capabilities?

To this day, concrete remains the most widely used construction material. However, its production process accounts for up to 8% of global carbon dioxide emissions. Facing such a massive carbon footprint, the search for more eco-friendly and sustainable materials is more urgent than ever!

Recently, researchers at a U.S. university discovered a "bio-brick" made from fungi and bacteria that could potentially replace high-carbon materials in the future. By injecting calcium carbonate-producing bacteria into dense mycelium, a process called biomineralisation causes the originally viscous and flexible mycelium to harden, forming a stronger "bone-like structure." Within this structure, the living bacteria remain active, giving the material traits like self-healing and environmental sensing. Currently, they can survive for at least a month, with hopes of extending this to years in the future.

While the development of this new material cannot yet be compared to traditional concrete, the carbon-reduction potential of "living buildings" is not to be underestimated. As technology advances rapidly, the green cities of the future may very well be composed of these breathing, self-healing structures!

【T · PARTY】The Journey of T · eNNIVERSARY – Event Highlights

Thank you all for joining us today at T · PARK for "The Journey of T · eNNIVERSARY" to welcome our 10th anniversary together!

The two "Eco-Friendly Bowtie Accessory Workshops" held today ended on a high note. It was wonderful to see all of you creatively transforming old clothes into unique bowties for yourselves or your pets. The process was fun and heartwarming. In addition, the concurrent celebrations were very lively. Visitors not only revisited the highlights of the park's ten-year journey and learned about sustainable fashion through booth games. Also, participants used old paper bags and expired magazines to craft their own cardholders and woven paper-strap baskets, extending the joy of green living into their daily lives.

We sincerely thank you for your support and companionship over these ten years. We hope this event allows everyone to experience the fun of environmental protection while carrying the concept of sustainable development into the next decade. We look forward to seeing you again in the future and continuing to write new stories of green living together!

【T · eNNIVERSARY | T．STORY】A Decade of Green Miracles

Time flies—it has been nearly ten years since T · PARK was officially named! Since our opening ceremony on May 19, 2016, we have walked alongside you for a whole decade.

As Hong Kong’s first self-sufficient sludge treatment facility, the establishment of T · PARK marked a new milestone in the city’s "waste-to-energy" journey. Over the past ten years, we have remained committed to incinerating sludge and desalinating seawater to achieve our goals of waste reduction and energy self-sufficiency.

Beyond operations, we strive to bring environmental awareness to everyone—from our early guided tours to the diverse and exciting workshops we curate today. Seeing people discover sustainability from different perspectives and even turning it into a daily habit is the ultimate recognition of our work!

This ten-year milestone is only the prologue; many more exciting chapters await. Thank you for being part of our journey over the past decade. Together, let’s look forward to an even greener decade ahead!
