From the Nunnery to a Benedictine monastery, the BTO Acoustic Pipeline is helping to identify some of Europe’s most poorly-known bat species 🦇🎶
BTO bat acoustics specialist Stuart Newson was given a unique opportunity last month: to spend a week working in collaboration with Vincent Wildlife Trust at a former Benedictine monastery on Lokrum, a Croatian island near Dubrovnik, on its resident bat colony.
Stuart's mission was to collect sound recordings of two under-studies species, Mediterranean Long-eared Bat and David’s Myotis, and hone the Acoustic Pipeline's ability to identify them from their calls (the BTO Acoustic Pipeline is a powerful species identification tool, which analyses sound recordings and detects the wildlife found in them). This work will help us better support project funder The Endangered Landscapes Programme’s ecosystem restoration projects in southern and eastern Europe.
