The 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children is a United Nations campaign, which is held annually from 25 November to 10 December. The campaign focuses on raising awareness of the negative impact that gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF) has on women and children, and the social fabric of our society.
This year’s campaign will be held under the theme: “The Year of Charlotte Mannya Maxeke: 16 Days of Activism – moving from awareness to accountability” and takes place as the latest crime statistics show an increase in rapes, domestic violence, and child murders.

Every year, in August, our country marks Women’s Month, when we pay tribute to the more than 20 000 women who marched to the Union Buildings on 9 August 1956 in protest against the extension of Pass Laws to women.
This year marks 65 years since the watershed 1956 women’s march to the Union Buildings. The year 2020 also marks the twenty-sixth anniversary of the Beijing Platform for Action, which created a platform for greater gender equality.
This year’s commemoration will be held under the theme: “The year of Charlotte Mannya Maxeke: Realising Women’s Rights”. Ensuring and protecting rights for all has been a constant struggle for government and our social partners, as we battle the devastating COVID-19 pandemic.

I LIVE ABROAD. CAN I REGISTER AND VOTE IN THE 2021 ELECTIONS?
By law, South Africans who live abroad can only vote in South Africa’s NATIONAL elections (not provincial or municipal elections).
To vote in Municipal Elections you must be registered where you live in South Africa, and then vote where you are registered.
Unless you are already registered to vote in South Africa and are planning to return to South Africa in time for the elections on 27 October 2021, you will not be able to vote in South Africa’s 2021 Municipal Elections.
Municipal or local government elections are, by their nature, about electing local representatives for the area in which you live in South Africa.

For Nelson Mandela International Day 2021, the focus will be on two critical intersecting challenges being faced by South Africa and many other countries – food insecurity and cultures of lawlessness. Covid-19 has deepened patterns of poverty and inequality. The numbers of people going hungry are growing. Social cohesion is under severe strain. Evidence of diminishing respect for ‘the rule of law’ is apparent everywhere.

This year marks the 45th anniversary of the 16 June 1976 student uprising in Soweto when young people protested against imposition of Afrikaans by the apartheid regime as a medium of instruction.
The uprising ended tragically with hundreds of young people being brutally killed. Following the advent of democracy in 1994, the new democratic government declared 16 June as National Youth Day and June as Youth Month.
This year National Youth Day and Youth Month will be celebrated under the theme: “The Year of Charlotte Mannya Maxeke: Growing youth employment for an inclusive and transformed society.”
