When people picture the UN, they rarely picture the EU standing behind it. Here is why they should.

Together, the EU and its Member States are the largest collective contributors to the UN system, year after year. A support that is structural.

The EU Member States contribute over 21% of the UN peacekeeping budget. Since the UN Peacebuilding Fund was created, the EU and its Member States have contributed over €630 million, providing more than 60% of total funding. On the ground, 22 EU civilian and military missions work hand in hand with the UN on the ground, such as in Libya, Somalia and the Central African Republic.

Behind every figure is the same idea: Multilateralism only works when someone is willing to resource it. The EU keeps showing up.

Strong Business Support Organisations start with understanding and responding to the businesses they serve.

Join the second session of the Masterclass Series for Business Support Organisations, organised by the ASEAN Secretariat in collaboration with the International Trade Centre (ITC). The Masterclass Series is delivered under the EU-ASEAN Sustainable Connectivity Package – Trade (SCOPE) Trade project, funded by the European Union under the Global Gateway strategy.

🤝 Session 2: Attracting and Retaining Engaged Members and Clients

Participants will learn practical approaches to attract and retain members and clients, better respond to the evolving needs of businesses, and design relevant products and services. The session will also explore how BSOs can assess their performance and build lasting engagement with the private sector.

EU is Strengthening Business Support Organisations to better serve businesses across ASEAN.

The ASEAN Secretariat, in collaboration with the International Trade Centre (ITC), is bringing together Business Support Organisations (BSOs) across ASEAN for a two-part online Masterclass Series under the EU-ASEAN Sustainable Connectivity Package – Trade (SCOPE) Trade project, funded by the European Union under the Global Gateway strategy.

The series will equip BSOs and other relevant stakeholders with practical approaches and good practices to strengthen their institutional performance and deliver greater value to businesses.

Participants will explore:
📣 Effective advocacy and representation of business interests
🤝 Strategies to attract and retain engaged members and clients
📊 Approaches to assess and strengthen institutional performance

The Director-General of the European Commission’s Health Emergency Preparedness and Response Authority (HERA), Dr Florika Fink-Hooijer, met with the Secretary-General of ASEAN, Dr Kao Kim Hourn, in Jakarta on 4 September 2026 to discuss health emergency preparedness and response to emerging health threats, and to explore deeper cooperation between the EU and ASEAN. 

Both regions face similar challenges from emerging threats such as infectious diseases, which will further increase with climate change and increased travel, requiring global and regional cooperation.

Both sides acknowledged that regional partnerships are essential to prepare for the next health emergency — it’s a matter of when, not if. Building close EU-ASEAN cooperation on health emergency preparedness and response is therefore critical to ensuring a collective response, as we look ahead to the Commemorative Summit in 2027 marking the 50th anniversary of EU-ASEAN Dialogue Relations.

Among other topics, discussions covered future partnership in the establishment and operations of the ASEAN Centre for Public Health Emergencies and Emerging Diseases (ACPHEED), as well as other key avenues for deeper collaboration.

Was an honour to present my Letter of Credence to the ASEAN SG H.E. Dr. Kao Kim Hourn on 2nd September 2026. EU-ASEAN partnership of strategic importance to advance shared commitment to peace, prosperity, & the rules-based international order. The EU and ASEAN held their 8th High-Level Dialogue on Environment and Climate Change on 12 August. It was a rich exchange on Europe and Southeast Asia’s continued ambitions in the green transition and on the upcoming multilateral meetings on desertification, biodiversity, climate change, plastics and water.

The dialogue marked the momentum created by the first joint Ministerial meeting on these topics (held in Langkawi, Malaysia, in September 2025) and is a key milestone in the run up to 2027, when ASEAN and the EU celebrate 50 years of dialogue relations.

On environment, ASEAN Member States expressed strong interest for deeper engagement with the EU on biodiversity, circular economy and plastics pollution, and to join forces to turn ASEAN’s commitments into practical solutions.

On climate, carbon pricing and climate adaptation emerge as two clear priorities for cooperation in the future. Next month, the EU will host a study visit by ASEAN Member States to Brussels to continue peer learning and capacity-building on carbon pricing and carbon markets.
