October 26, 2025, Rotary Clubs throughout Indonesia celebrated World Polio Day with great enthusiasm in several major cities.

World Polio Day is a powerful reminder of the devastating impact this disease can have on children. It’s a day to raise funds and awareness so that more children are spared from the paralysing effects of polio.

Every drop of vaccine is crucial, and every donation brings us closer to a future where no child suffers from polio again. In the hardest-to-reach communities, these drops symbolise both protection and hope.

For every dollar you donate, the Gates Foundation will turn it into three. Your $10 becomes $30, which can provide an estimated 48 vaccines in some of the world's most challenging, war-torn areas.

With your support, Rotary and partners can continue their vital work to reach every child in every community until polio is eradicated.

Thank you for joining us on World Polio Day and helping turn drops of vaccine into a future free from polio.

A new animated video tells the story of 12-year-old Vivi Ebert, who was paralysed during a polio epidemic that swept through Copenhagen in August 1952. Ebert was the first to receive a revolutionary treatment that saved her life and that of countless others.

A 2025 update on the polio fight | Bill Gates 17/10/2025

Back in 1988, when Rotary International and the World Health Assembly set the goal of eradication, the virus was paralysing more than 350,000 children each year across 125 countries. If we finish the job, we free up billions of dollars for other health priorities and—most importantly—protect generations of children from a virus that has paralysed millions.

Turning Trash into Hope.

As the year comes to a close, RC Jakarta Sentral International would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to all fellow Rotarians and friends who participated in purchasing EPN cookie packages, which began last October in honour of World Polio Day.

Thanks to these sales, we have raised a total of approximately Rp. 11,700,000 (around US$ 720), which will help fund polio vaccines through our club. We are pleased to announce that we have now completed our contributions to The Rotary Foundation, amounting to USD 720.

This brief report is submitted for everyone's awareness.

Rotary Greetings. 👌🏻🙏

Last week, PDG Thomas Aquinas, the National PolioPlus Committee Chair for Indonesia from Rotary International, undertook a vital trip to Papua to address the ongoing polio crisis. Despite a government-led National Immunization Sub-Week aimed at combating polio, the vaccination coverage in several remote areas, particularly in the Bintang mountains, remained inadequate. Many communities were resistant to outside intervention, making it challenging for health workers to provide essential immunizations.

To navigate these difficulties, PDG Thomas sought assistance from Father Kees, a trusted figure within the Pegunungan Bintang community. Together, they arrived in Oksibil on October 10, 2024, where they met with local health officials and uncovered alarming data about recent polio suspects, emphasizing the urgent need for vaccination efforts.

Over the next several days, PDG Thomas and Father Kees worked tirelessly to gain the support of community leaders and facilitate vaccinations in the Oksop and Eipumek districts. They organized socialization events to educate residents about polio and the significance of immunization. Their efforts culminated in successful vaccination drives, where both polio and catch-up vaccines were administered to children who had previously been unvaccinated.

Despite facing logistical challenges, including inclement weather that delayed their return and restricted travel, the team was able to initiate vaccinations in several remote areas, including Batom and Muara, garnering interest and participation from local children and families.

Though the total number of vaccinations may not seem substantial, the trip represented a significant breakthrough in reaching previously underserved communities. By leveraging the influence of a respected local leader, PDG Thomas and Father Kees were able to facilitate health worker access and, ultimately, ensure that some of the most vulnerable populations received the necessary immunizations against polio. This collaborative approach illustrates the importance of community trust in public health initiatives. 👌

Resilience in the face of polio 29/08/2024

Despite all the obstacles before me, I chose to not let polio define who I would be. It was difficult, but employing resilience, I pursued my studies successfully. Resilience is getting up every morning, taking your cane or crutches, putting on your orthopedic device, and walking slowly but surely.
