We are pleased to share news of the first Southeast Asian screening of Julián (2025), a Sammarinese short film directed by Umberto Baldacci and produced by Lorenzo Moraccini at Serbuk Kayu, the Surabaya-based artist collective that hosted the event on February 21st 2026. The screening was followed by an online Q&A with the director, offering audiences the opportunity to explore the creative process and themes behind this intimate and visually evocative work.
Julián, an Argentinian teenager with Sammarinese roots, joins a cultural exchange program in the land of his ancestors. As he navigates classes, field trips, and new friendships, he holds onto a secret mission: keeping a promise he made to his father. In order to do so, he will need to piece together fragments of his grandfather's stories and track down places linked to a long-buried childhood memory. Guided only by old photographs and hazy recollections, Julián embarks on a quiet journey through rolling hills, local archives, and little villages. Through his eyes-those of a foreign boy in search of belonging and reconciliation-the Republic of San Marino becomes a dreamlike landscape where past and present blur, and where family roots emerge from the wind, the tall grass, and a forgotten oak tree.
The production was supported by the Ministries of Education and Culture, Foreign Affairs, Tourism, Territory and Environment, and Industry of the Republic of San Marino. Coordinated by Embassy intern Chiara Giardi, screenings such as this foster dialogue between European and Southeast Asian film communities and present San Marino from a richer and more complex perspective — one especially marked by migration, memory, and transnational ties.

We are pleased to celebrate the successful conclusion of the Sammarinese exhibition phase of Translating Pram (Dec. 5th-31st at Palazzo Graziani, Rep. San Marino), an interdisciplinary, traveling curatorial research project curated by Berto Tukan, Chiara Giardi, Moch. Hasrul and Paola Pietronave. The project focuses on translations of the work of the Indonesian author Pramoedya Ananta Toer.
With the patronage of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Culture and Education of the Republic of San Marino, this chapter focused in particular on Perburuan (Il fuggitivo), the first book by Pramoedya translated directly from Indonesian into Italian by Giulio Soravia and Guido Corradi, and published in 2007 by AIEP Editore in San Marino. Starting from this significant editorial connection, the exhibition unfolded as a laboratory of exchange across languages, disciplines, and communities. The programme included film screenings of The Fugitive and This Earth of Mankind; the presentation and live improvisational performance by Paolo Rossi, organised in collaboration with the cultural cooperative Il Macello; the reading group; as well as guided tours and workshops that enlivened the entire exhibition period. The project was also honoured by the personal visit of Prof. Dr. Junimart Girsang, Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia to Italy and accredited to San Marino, and one of the main sponsors of the exhibition.
Translating Pram does not end here. The relationships and practices activated in San Marino continue through educational initiatives and shared research linking San Marino, Italy, and Indonesia. The curatorial team is already working with new partners on the project’s next phases.

On 19 November, the curatorial team of “Translating Pram” — Berto Tukan, Chiara Giardi, Moch. Hasrul, and Paola Pietronave — presented their ongoing research at the Indonesia International Conference on Cultural Diplomacy (IICCD) 2025, held at the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) of the Universitas Indonesia (UI).
With their paper titled “Translating Pram: A Curatorial Approach to Cultural Diplomacy,” the team explored how literature — and particularly translation, as expressed in curatorial practice — can cross national borders and foster mutual understanding between contexts that differ in language, history, and political structures. Their presentation highlighted the potential of cultural work to build bridges and deepen dialogue between Indonesia, San Marino, Italy and the broader international community.
The conference, inaugurated by the Minister of Culture of the Republic of Indonesia, also featured contributions from Marco Marchetti (Professor of International Law and Governance and Vice President for Diversity and International Affairs at Nusa Putra University) and was attended by Roberto Carniel (Scientific Attaché of the Embassy of Italy in Jakarta), enriching the discussions on cultural diplomacy from multiple disciplinary perspectives.

The University of San Marino and Kalbis University (Jakarta) collaborating on Translating Pram
As part of the global celebrations marking the centenary of Pramoedya Ananta Toer, one of Indonesia’s most influential literary figures, the project "Translating Pram" is bringing its rich cultural program to the Republic of San Marino as first chapter of a traveling exhibition. Launched to research and celebrate the legacy of Pram’s translated works transnationally, the initiative is fostering connections between San Marino and Indonesia through literature, education, and creative collaboration.
Following a successful press conference in February 2025, the project reached an important milestone in cultural diplomacy with the signing of a cooperation agreement between the University of San Marino and Kalbis University in Jakarta. This partnership led to a joint international workshop, held from September 3rd to 13th, aimed at developing an interactive installation dedicated to Pramoedya’s life and work. The installation connects elements of Indonesian and Sammarinese history, focusing on the perspective of the people.
The workshop was conceived as a creative relay between the two countries. Students in Jakarta initiated the process by designing the visual identity of the project and creating key elements for a historical timeline. Building on this foundation, students in San Marino developed and realized the final interactive installation. The result of this collaboration will be presented in the exhibition "Translating Pram", on display at Palazzo Graziani in San Marino from December 5th to 31st, 2025.
This initiative not only honors the legacy of a literary giant but also stands as a testament to the role of the arts and education in strengthening ties between nations.

San Marino recognises the State of Palestine
The Congress of State [San Marino’s government], in today's session, adopted its own resolution through which it proceeded with the “recognition by the Republic of San Marino of the State of Palestine as a sovereign and independent State, within internationally recognized borders and in accordance with the relevant United Nations resolutions.”
The resolution refers to the actions taken in recent times and the spirit that led to the decision by the Executive, particularly the principles enshrined in the United Nations Charter, the Agreement on the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations with the Palestinian National Authority of 1996, the motions approved by the Grand and General Council [San Marino’s parliament], the accreditation of the first Palestinian Ambassador in January 2025, the High-Level International Conference for the peaceful resolution of the Palestinian issue and the implementation of the two-State solution held last July, and San Marino’s consistent support for the recognition of the State of Palestine.
The announcement was made by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Luca Beccari, who conveyed the unanimous will of the Sammarinese institutions and community in reaffirming their support for the two-State solution—one that cannot be separated from the existence of a sovereign, independent State of Palestine living in peace and mutual recognition with the State of Israel.
In the same resolution presented today, the Congress of State also authorized Minister Beccari to communicate this decision to the international community during the proceedings of the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, currently taking place in New York—thus joining the group of countries that have taken the same position.
"With this clearly expressed position," stated Minister for Foreign Affairs Luca Beccari, “San Marino reaffirms and further concretizes its stance of active neutrality, which has always characterized the Republic’s foreign policy. A State that is present, attentive, and not indifferent to current geopolitical scenarios. The next step will be my speech on Saturday at the General Assembly, followed by the official communication to the competent Authorities of the State of Palestine.”
