-HISTORY-
Ten years after the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) ASEAN Declaration adopted on 8th August 1967 in Bangkok, Thailand. Parliamentarians realized that the ASEAN emanates from the roots of its societies. Following the initial contacts, the visit to Indonesia by Malaysian parliamentary delegation in August 1973 and by Singapore parliamentary delegation in November of the same

On 2 June 2026, H.E. Dr. Chem Widhya, Secretary-General of AIPA, attended the ERIA School of Government Leadership Lecture held in Jakarta, Indonesia.

The lecture featured H.E. José Ramos-Horta, the 4th and 7th President of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste and Nobel Peace Laureate, in a dialogue under the theme “Leadership in Dangerous Times: Human Rights, Nation-Building, and Regional Diplomacy.” The lecture offered valuable reflections on democratic resilience, peacebuilding, regional cooperation, and the responsibilities of leadership in times of uncertainty.

The event brought together policymakers, scholars, diplomats, and regional stakeholders to exchange perspectives on governance, diplomacy, and sustainable development, while reflecting on lessons from Timor-Leste’s journey towards independence, reconciliation, and nation-building.

On 1 June, Indonesia commemorates Pancasila Day, honoring the nation’s foundational philosophy that continues to uphold unity, diversity, and social justice.

As guiding principles for harmony and nation-building, the values of Pancasila remain relevant in fostering mutual respect, solidarity, and peaceful coexistence within society and across the region.

Welcome to the AIPA Secretariat Weekly Highlights from 25 to 29 May 2026.

Throughout the week, the AIPA Secretariat participated in a series of courtesy calls, parliamentary engagements, conferences, receptions, roadshows, and regional initiatives aimed at strengthening relations with Member Parliaments, Dialogue Partners, the diplomatic community, and relevant stakeholders. These engagements provided valuable opportunities to exchange views on regional and global developments, while reaffirming AIPA’s commitment to advancing inter-parliamentary cooperation, regional collaboration, and sustainable development initiatives across ASEAN and beyond.

As the 5th Meeting of the Coordinating Committee of Women Parliamentarians of AIPA (WAIPA) and the 3rd Consultative Meeting of Young Parliamentarians of AIPA (YPA) were recently held, AIPACAST returns with important regional conversations on women and youth leadership in ASEAN.

In Season 2 Episode 5 part 2, AIPACAST explores “Voices of YPA: Empowering Future-Ready Youth Leaders in ASEAN” featuring Hon. Jonathan Clement “JC” M. Abalos II, Chairperson of Young Parliamentarians of AIPA (YPA), and Member of the House of Representatives of the Republic of the Philippines; Hon. Bramantyo Suwondo, Vice Chairperson of the Committee for Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation of the House of Representatives of Indonesia; Hon. Xaypanya Phomvihane, Member of the National Assembly of Lao PDR; Hon. Faustino Michael T. Dy III, Member of the House of Representatives of the Philippines; and Hon. Romtham Khumnurak, Member of the National Assembly of the Kingdom of Thailand.

The AIPA Roadshow returned to Cambodia! 🇰🇭

The 25th AIPA Roadshow took place on 27 May 2026, bringing AIPA closer to youth through dialogue on climate action, parliamentary engagement, and the role of young people in advancing sustainable development within ASEAN.

Carrying the theme “Act, Speak, Change: Youth for Climate Action,” the programme featured Welcoming Remarks by H.E. Ly Navuth, President of BELTEI International University, followed by a presentation by the AIPA Secretariat and a Keynote Speech by H.E. Ty Sokhun, Secretary of the Commission on Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Information of the National Assembly of the Kingdom of Cambodia.

The programme also featured an exclusive dialogue session with H.E. Khut Chandara, Vice Chairman of the Young Parliamentarians of the National Assembly of the Kingdom of Cambodia; A/P Louis Ng, Associate Professor at NUS College; and Ms. Putri Maha Lima, Deputy Secretary-General of AIPA,

The event concluded with Closing Remarks by H.E. Dr. Ly Chheng, Vice-Chairman of the Commission on Public Works, Transport, Civil Aviation, Post, Telecommunications, Industry, Science, Technology, Innovation, Mines, Energy, Commerce, Land Management, Urban Planning and Construction of the National Assembly of the Kingdom of Cambodia.

[Part 2 — Session 3 - Closing Ceremony]

The AIPA–Cambodia National Parliamentary Conference on Climate Governance was successfully convened on 26 May 2026 at the National Assembly Palace in Phnom Penh, Kingdom of Cambodia, as part of the AIPA Capacity Development Programme on Climate Change.

Jointly organised by the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) and the National Assembly of the Kingdom of Cambodia, the Conference brought together more than 150 parliamentarians, parliamentary staff, government representatives, and experts to strengthen parliamentary engagement on climate governance and sustainable development.

Through thematic discussions on climate change, emissions reduction, adaptation and resilience, climate finance, and the role of parliaments in climate governance, the Conference reaffirmed the importance of parliamentary action in advancing climate commitments, strengthening regional cooperation, and supporting sustainable development across ASEAN.
