The Italian Trade Agency (ITA) Jakarta facilitated the participation of Indonesian delegates at SIMAC TANNING TECH 2026, held in Milan from September 15–17. Organised by Assomac – National Association of Italian Manufacturers of Footwear, Leathergoods and Tanning Technologies – in close cooperation with ITA - Italian Trade Agency and supported by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, this edition marks a new start for the sector, offering the premier international event showcasing Made in Italy technology and a valuable platform for Indonesian delegates to meet Italian exhibitors and develop fruitful business connections.

Indonesia was proudly represented by three tanneries: PT. Trio Putra, PT. Sinar Obor, and PT. Usaha Loka — the latter represented by its owner, who also serves as Vice Chairman of the Indonesia Tanneries Association (APKI). Their presence at SIMAC TANNING TECH underscores Indonesia’s commitment to industrial innovation and deepening collaboration with Italy’s world-class leather and fashion ecosystem.

Indonesia is one of Asia’s key markets for the tanning and footwear sector, ranking as the world’s third-largest footwear exporter after China and Vietnam, with an export volume of around 601 million pairs and an export value of approximately USD 7.9–8 billion in 2025 (+65% over 2020–2025), supported by investments of IDR 24.19 trillion (FDI) and IDR 1.65 trillion (domestic investment), and employing roughly 1.3 million people. On the Italian side, the national tanning industry recorded 877 companies (-3.2% year-on-year) and 17,445 employees (-2.0%) in 2025, with a production value of €4.0 billion (-5.8%) and €2.7 billion in exports — Italy accounts for 65% of European tanning production value and 72% of its volume. Total Italian exports to Indonesia reached €2.25 billion in 2025 (+80% year-on-year), including around €30 million in leather products and €5 million in footwear.

On 27 July 2026, the Italian Trade Agency (ITA) Jakarta Office, in collaboration with the Indonesian Fashion Designers and Entrepreneurs Association (APPMI – Asosiasi Perancang Pengusaha Mode Indonesia),Koperasi Kulit Artisan Indonesia (Artisan Leather Cooperative of Indonesia), the Italian Association of Manufacturers of Machines and Technologies for Footwear, Leather Goods and Tanning (ASSOMAC – Associazione Nazionale Costruttori Tecnologie per Calzature, Pelletteria e Concerie), and the Italian Footwear Manufacturers’ Association (Assocalzaturifici – Associazione Nazionale Calzaturifici Italiani), hosted a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) and institutional meeting at Piazza Firenze, Garut, West Java, Indonesia.

The initiative brought together government representatives, industry associations, and business leaders from Indonesia and Italy to strengthen cooperation in the leather and footwear sectors through knowledge exchange, technology transfer, skills development, industrial cooperation, and new business opportunities.

A significant highlight of the event was the signing of Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) between the Italian associations and Garut-based cooperatives and companies, marking an important milestone toward long-term industrial collaboration. These partnerships aim to enhance leather production capabilities, promote technology transfer, support local industry development, and establish concrete joint initiatives.

On 28 July 2026, the Italian delegation continued the program with an industrial visit to PT Garut Makmur Perkasa and the Rumah Produksi Bersama (Joint Production House), providing firsthand insights into Garut’s leather manufacturing ecosystem while exploring opportunities for technical cooperation and future business partnerships.

On July 27, 2026, the Italian Trade Agency (ITA) Jakarta Office, in collaboration with the Indonesian Fashion Designers and Entrepreneurs Association (APPMI), ASSOMAC, and Assocalzaturifici, hosted a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) and institutional meeting at Piazza Firenze. The event aimed to strengthen Indonesia’s fashion and leather industries through knowledge exchange, technology transfer, and new business opportunities.

The distinguished gathering was attended by Dr. Paolo Pinto, Trade Commissioner of the Italian Trade Agency Jakarta Office, alongside Mrs. Poppy Dharsono (General Chairwoman of the Garut Leather Artisan Cooperative), Dr. Agostino Apolito (General Manager of ASSOMAC - National Association of Italian Manufacturers of Footwear, Leathergoods, Tannery Machines and Accessories), Dr. Matteo Scarparo (Head of Global Trade & Business Services at Assocalzaturifici), and Dr. Giorgio Possagno (General Manager of Assocalzaturifici).

Representatives from the Garut Regency local government and key institutions were also present, including Panel Barus (Deputy for Cooperative Business Development), Daddy Mulyadi (Expert Staff to the Regent of Garut and Acting Assistant Regional Secretary II for Economy and Development), Febbie A. Zam Zami (Head of the Vocational Division at the Garut Chamber of Commerce and Industry), Drs. Natsir Alwi, M.Si (Head of the Regional Development Planning Agency of Garut Regency), Rudy Gunawan (Regent of Garut), Dr. Irfan Nabhani, S.E., M.T. (Rector of Universitas Garut), and Anto Sudaryanto (President Director of Spinindo Group).

This strategic initiative highlights the shared commitment of Indonesia and Italy to reinforce economic cooperation, advance technological integration in the leather and footwear industries, and cultivate lasting commercial partnerships.
