Timor-Leste’s ASEAN era is beginning — and Canada is paying attention!

Joined by the Canada-ASEAN Business Council, Export Development Canada, National Bank of Canada, and BlackBerry, our delegation led by Ambassador Jess Dutton spent last week in Timor-Leste meeting with Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão, President José Ramos-Horta, cabinet ministers, international organizations and business leaders — to discuss the country’s economic ambitions and emerging investment opportunities. From discussions on energy ⚡️, finance 🏦 to digital connectivity 📱, it was a productive week that highlighted both Timor-Leste’s ambition and the momentum of our bilateral relationship

The visit was made extra special by Independence Day celebrations, where the delegation joined dignitaries from around the world in celebrating the country’s 24th birthday. 🎉 We’re excited to deepen Canada and Timor-Leste commercial ties as the country steps onto the regional stage. 🇨🇦🇹🇱

Ambassador Jess Dutton met with Rosan Roeslani, Minister of Investment and Downstream Industry and CEO of Danantara Indonesia — Indonesia’s sovereign wealth fund managing over CAD1.2 trillion 💰.

Building on the momentum from President Prabowo’s 2025 visit to Canada, the discussion strengthened collaboration in key strategic sectors, opening significant opportunities for Canadian companies.
🤝 Canada welcomes the progress toward Indonesia’s ratification of the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement, paving the way for ambitious investments, stronger partnerships with Danantara, and tangible economic benefits for both countries 🇨🇦 🇮🇩✨.

Matur nuwun, Yogya! What an inspiring day we had as we explored the cultural heart of Java through discussions, collaboration, and knowledge-sharing. At the State Islamic University Sunan Kalijaga, this morning we teamed up with and the university’s library to launch a Wikipedia writing workshop, helping participants sharpen their skills in writing, editing, and contributing credible articles online. We also donated Canadian books to enrich the collection at the library’s Canadian Resource Centre 📚🍁

The day continued at Muhammadiyah University Yogyakarta, where Second Secretary Andy Scheske delivered a guest lecture on Canada’s foreign policy and Canada-Indonesia relations. The room was packed with over 30 participants, and the Q&A session sparked lively discussions on topics ranging from the environment to Canada as a middle power 🎓💬

Matur nuwun, !

Have you ever been to a geothermal plant? 👀

Last week, Ambassador Jess Dutton stopped by the Sarulla Geothermal Plant ⚡️— a project in North Sumatra supported by the Canadian Climate Fund for the Private Sector in Asia and tje Asian Development Bank 🌍. The visit showed how geothermal energy is helping to power Indonesia’s clean energy transition in a fast-changing world.

Indonesia holds some of the largest geothermal potential on the planet, offering a tremendous opportunity to tap into clean, reliable, homegrown energy while boosting energy security and reducing emissions.

But Sarulla isn’t just about energy — it’s about people too ❤️. The project supports, among others, women’s weaving training 🧵 and microcredit programs 💼 that help spark entrepreneurship, strengthen inclusion, and create long term economic opportunities in nearby villages.

April marked a significant month for Canada–Indonesia defence cooperation. Earlier last month we had back‑to‑back visits from the Commander of the Canadian Defence Academy, MGen Jeannot Boucher, and a delegation from the Canadian Forces College National Security Program. Their engagements with the National Defence University, the National Resilience Institute, the TNI Academies Headquarters, and the National Research and Innovation Agency underscored both countries’ shared commitment to strengthening collaboration in the professional military education domain.

Last week, Canada’s Director General of Defence Industry, Ravi Singh, wrapped up his inaugural visit to Jakarta after meeting key interlocutors across Indonesia’s defence industry — from the Ministry of Defence to PT LEN. The visit follows the launch of Canada’s new Defence Industrial Strategy in February 2026 - a major step forward to deepen strategic partnerships and expand defence commercial opportunities between our two countries.
