Independence is not celebrated as a single moment in history, but through the choices we make every day, the values we live by, and the future we build together, says Prime Minister Honourable Sitiveni Ligamamada Rabuka.

In his address to the nation marking Fijiโ€™s 55th year of independence, the Prime Minister said 10 October is a reminder of who we are โ€” โ€œa people of strength, humility, and unity; a nation grounded in faith, tradition, and modern ambition; and a Pacific beacon of peace, democracy, and progress.โ€

โ€œLet us stand together โ€” not as iTaukei or Indo-Fijians, not as urban or rural dwellers, not divided by faith โ€” but as one people, under one flag, with one vision. From the mountains of Viti Levu to the coral atolls of Yasawa, from the forests of Vanua Levu to the shores of Rotuma โ€” let peace prevail. Let unity strengthen us. Let progress reach every home.

โ€œWe face mountain-like challenges. But as the Lord Jesus Christ said in the Gospel of Matthew: โ€˜If ye have faith as small as a mustard seedโ€ฆ nothing shall be impossible unto you.โ€™
โ€œLet us hold that faith โ€” in ourselves, in each other, and in Fiji under God. Let Peace, Unity and Progress For All be our call to arms from this day forward.โ€

Noting that nearly 70 per cent of Fijiโ€™s population was born after independence from Great Britain in 1970, the Prime Minister recalled that the nationโ€™s founding fathers โ€œenvisioned a country where all people โ€” regardless of ethnicity, faith, or background โ€” could live together in harmony.โ€

โ€œToday, we honour that vision by acknowledging the contributions of every community: the iTaukei, Indo-Fijians, Rotumans, Chinese, Europeans, Pacific Islanders, and all others who call these islands home.

โ€œOur indigenous iTaukei communities remain the custodians of our land and traditions, sharing their resources and space for the wellbeing of many, preserving the identity that defines Fiji for all time.

โ€œOur Indo-Fijian brothers and sisters have enriched our economy, culture, and social fabric through their hard work and resilience.

โ€œAll our communities have contributed to the tapestry of our nation โ€” a nation made stronger by its many threads.โ€

The Prime Minister also addressed matters of defence, security, and global peace, recalling that Fijiโ€™s peace doctrine โ€” the Pacific Way, pioneered by the nationโ€™s founding Prime Minister, the late Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara โ€” continues to guide the nationโ€™s regional security vision.

โ€œFijiโ€™s international standing today has been paid for by the sacrifices of its sons and daughters. In the Great War, in regions closer to home, and through 45 years of international peacekeeping, we know the price of peace.

โ€œWith the endorsement of the Pacific Islands Forum Leaders this year, Fiji and the Pacific have made a profound contribution to international peace and security through the Ocean of Peace Declaration.

โ€œTo our servicemen and women โ€” our peacekeepers serving abroad โ€” serve with pride. For blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called children of the Most High God.โ€
