Our volunteers’ experience in Bali is not only about protecting the ocean, but also about discovering and connecting with the local culture.

Last week, they joined a little workshop on how to make canang, one of the traditional offerings made by Balinese Hindus.

During this workshop, they learned how to make canang sari, a traditional daily offering made by Balinese Hindus. From arranging the flowers to learning the meaning behind the offering, they were curious, excited, and fully involved throughout the activity. ✨

It was a pleasure for us to share a small part of our culture with them and see their enthusiasm as they learned something new.

Thank you for being open to learning, experiencing, and connecting with our culture. πŸ’› 🌸✨

Last week, our volunteers did more than just build and deploy artificial reef structures into the ocean. They also took part in a beach clean-up, collecting plastic waste along the shores of Tianyar Beach. πŸŒŠβ™»οΈ

Every piece of plastic removed is a step towards a cleaner, healthier coastline for both marine life and our community.

Thank you to all of our amazing volunteers for your hard work and dedication for making a positive impact and helping us protect our ocean! πŸ’™πŸŒŠ. Together, we can make a real difference.

We are very pleased to release 24 newly hatched hawksbill turtle hatchlings. This is an especially exciting event for us, as hawksbill sea turtles rarely nest here. We hope these tiny hatchlings will grow strong and thrive in the ocean, and one day return to these shores to continue the cycle of life. 🌊🐒

A special thank you to our volunteer, Susanne for capturing this moment so beautifully ❀️

🐠 Do artificial reefs really work?

A recent study published in Marine Biology followed fish communities on our restoration site over a five-year period (2020–2024). This work was a collaboration between ourselves, , and our research partners at .

The results show that the hard work of our local communities and international volunteers is paying off πŸ’™

Here’s what we found:

🌊 Artificial reefs quickly attract marine life
Just 1–3 years after deployment, our artificial reefs were already supporting fish communities similar to nearby natural coral reefs.

🐟 Hundreds of species recorded
Over five years we recorded 209 fish species on artificial reefs, compared with 249 species on natural reefs. Nearby degraded sandy areas had very little marine life.

πŸ“ˆ Artificial reefs dramatically increase biodiversity
Artificial reefs supported almost 10Γ— more fish species than degraded habitats.

🦈 Different habitats support different fish
Artificial reefs supported more predatory fish, while natural reefs supported more herbivores and plankton-feeding fish.

⏳ Long-term monitoring matters
Because we monitored these reefs for five years, we could see changes that shorter studies might miss.

Volunteers and local fishermen came together with incredible spirit to build and place artificial coral reefs into the sea. Step by step, we are helping bring life back to the ocean. πŸͺΈπŸ πŸŒŠ
