Yesterday afternoon, I attended the wake of Teody “Tony” Manipon, who is the husband of the sister of the wife of Paul Encarnacion. The wife of Paul is Telly Nacpil Encarnacion and her sister is Aidajean “Jeann" Nacpil Manipon.

Paul and I, together with our mutual friend, Fidel Nemenzo were ‘running buddies’ in U.P. I was the team captain of the U.P. Track Team as well as the Assistant Track Coach. Paul and I would hang out together with the other members of the track team. I personally trained Paul for the U.A.A.P competition.

When I began to write my memoirs and the prologue of the “History of Gintong Alay”, Ignacio Dee helped me to get in touch with my former running mates so I could better explain my U.P. running days and how it led to the creation of G.A. This led me to meeting up with Fidel. Paul was residing in the States, so our communication was through Facebook.

That's why I came to the wake both to see Paul for the first time in 46 years and of course to Condole with Telly and her sister Jeannie.

May Tony Manipon Rest in Peace.

Last night, we had dinner with my former executive secretary, Christian Garvida who now works in Manila and my Australian friend, Nick Horden (recently arrived in the Philippines), who is writing a book on my father, who specifically came to the Philippines to investigate my father’s connection to the country, the people and of course my mother, Elizabeth Marcos Keon, the Late Governor of Ilocos Norte and sister of the former President of the Philippines Pres. Ferdinand Edralin Marcos, who was my father’s first wife.

Nick Horden has discovered so many interesting facts about both my mother and father’s life. He is a former Diplomat having served in both Pakistan and Sri Lanka. He then worked as a journalist for the Australian Financial Review. He is now a full-time Author having written several books.

Last night in Manila, we had a get together dinner at Mamou 5 at Greenbelt with two of the Stalwart Leaders of Philippine Sports namely Cynthia Carrion, President of the Gymnastics Association of the Philippines and Karen Tanchangco, President of the Sepak Takraw Association of the Philippines together with her husband, Ricardo Bojoe Caballero. Gymnastics contributed 2 golds and one bronze courtesy of the Yulo brothers and Sepak contributed one silver and one bronze to the over-all medal tally of the Philippines.

I have known Cynthia for many years having previously worked with her when I was the Sports Consultant to the Philippine Sports Commission and subsequently the National Training Director of Team Philippines during the 2005 SEA Games hosted by the Philippines (where we emerged as Champion for the first time) during the time of the P.S.C. Chairman Ramirez. Karen on the other hand brought the National Sepak Takraw Championship to Ilocos Norte staged at the Centennial Arena. She also helped us develop our Sepak Takraw Program in Laoag.

Present also was Renato together with April Unso (Renato was a Track Coach when I was the Governor of the Province of Ilocos until I became the Mayor of Laoag City), and my good Friend Fidel Nemenzo, who is a Mathematics professor at the University of the Philippines (UP) and was my running mate during my UP days. This was a gathering of people who have contributed to the Development of Philippine Sports.

It was a very happy and jovial gathering, where Cynthia and Karen relayed to us kwento about the Asian Games and we exchanged memories and insights about the state of Philippine Sports and Sports in general!

Last night, Cecil Llanes together with his son, Cecil Joshua and his brother Alden, dropped round for dinner and to catch up. We had not had a real conversation and get-together for a very long time. We enjoyed the night!

Yesterday afternoon, I dropped by the residence of General Benjamin C. Acorda, Jr. At present, he is the Executive Director of the Presidential Anti-Organized Crime Commission (PAOCC).

I have known Benjamin ever since he was the Commander In Chief of the Philippine National Police during my first term as the ‘Ama ti Syudad ti Laoag’. He was very supportive of Laoag City during his term.

The Acorda Family were celebrating the second anniversary of the Saint Ignatius of Loyola Chapel which the Family built at their residence at Brgy. Corocor, Bacarra. After the mass which was officiated by Father Rey M. Respicio, Benjamin took me on a tour of his Memorabilia Archive Room.

Benjamin is married to Oliva Afaga Acorda, her sister is Henedina Afaga who was the Tourism Officer then Konsehala and later the Vice Mayor of Bacarra.

His mother, Purificacion Casuga Acorda, was the daughter of Capt. Felipe Casuga, a USAFE who led the guerilla forces that liberated the Province of La Union during the Second World War, which cost him his life.
