People Before Profit Arklow

Until every person has secure, affordable housing, and until every child has a home and a warm bed, we will keep fighting for the right to a home for all. We don’t believe that we’re helpless and simply at the mercy of private developers we believe we can build the homes ourselves with our own workers, and our own planners, on our own public land for our own good not for profit. The housing crisis is not a crisis for the interests Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil represent. Their politics and ideology have delivered close to 16,000 people into homelessness and left more than 5,000 children stuck in the limbo of emergency accommodation, waiting for the day when they finally have the security of a home. Until the vulture funds, corporate landlords, and speculators who profit from this crisis are moved out of the way, we will not achieve housing justice. To do that we need to replace Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael who exist to appease them.

Harvey deserved so much better from the state

We are delighted that Harvey will now get a full statutory inquiry, bringing us a significant step closer to justice for him, his family, and all children struggling for care and support with disabilities and illness. This was made possible by the unwavering fight of Harvey’s family, Gillian and Stephen, and the powerful movement they built around their son.

Now we must ensure this can never happen again and build a public health system that truly serves everyone, patients and staff alike, to their fullest.

Across Ireland, Airbnb and other short-term letting companies are stripping thousands of homes from the long-term rental market. In our cities, short-term tourist lets are being prioritised over affordable housing - driving up rents, deepening gentrification, and forcing working people further from the communities they built. Airbnb is allowing its users to operate illegally across Ireland, and the government is turning a blind eye. In Dublin, almost every Airbnb we checked was operating without permission. Since 2019, only one property in South Dublin has been granted planning permission for short-term letting, and just two form-15 notifications have been filed - the minimum required for exemption. This shows just how widespread non-compliance really is. We need to take on every vulture fund, every speculator, and every corporate landlord profiting from the housing crisis and hollowing out our cities. We need cities that actually work to serve the people who make them run. A city where housing is a right, where our public spaces and green areas are protected, and where communities can stay rooted and thrive. Tackling the crisis that is illegal short-term letting is just one way we can build toward cities, and communities that are genuinely affordable and wherever we’ve seen cities and councils take this issue seriously and act, rents have fallen.
