🇮🇪 Looking back to the 1916 rising in Dublin
The 1916 Rising, often called the Easter Rising, was a pivotal moment in Irish history that took place during Easter Week, April 1916 in Dublin. It marked a bold, if initially unsuccessful, attempt to end British rule in Ireland, and it ultimately changed the course of Irish independence.

What happened?
A group of Irish republicans launched an armed rebellion against British authority. Key leaders included:

On Easter Monday (April 24, 1916), they seized key buildings across Dublin, most famously the General Post Office, which became the headquarters of the rebellion. From there, Patrick Pearse proclaimed the establishment of an Irish Republic. The rebellion lasted about six days. British forces quickly responded, bringing in thousands of soldiers and heavy artillery.Much of central Dublin was heavily damaged. Civilians were caught in the crossfire. The rebels were eventually forced to surrender. Even though the Rising failed militarily, it succeeded politically and symbolically. It inspired future generations and remains a defining moment in Ireland’s journey to independence. 🇮🇪
