In the “Archives of the Jewish People”, Jerusalem, a significant portion ‎of the “Sha'arei Chesed Society” [also “Sha’arei Chessed, Hebrew: “Gates of Loving-‎Kindness”] archives are preserved.‎

The society was founded in 1908 by Rabbi Naftali Zvi Porush-Gliekmann.‎

In 1909, the society established the "Sha'arei Chesed" neighborhood in the western part of ‎central Jerusalem. The neighborhood, which still exists today, borders the 'Rehavia' ‎neighborhood and is bounded by Ussishkin and Keren Kayemeth Israel (KKL) streets.‎

Alongside its activities in purchasing land, planning and constructing residential buildings, ‎the society provided financial assistance to those who approached it to purchase property. ‎These were interest-free loans, known as "Gamach", which were specifically aimed at ‎members of the middle class referred to in contemporary Hebrew as 'Haredi' (ultra-Orthodox) ‎public.‎

Preserved in the “Archives of the Jewish People” among others, preserved ‎a ledger of pledges from the “General Free-Loan Fund of the Sha'arei Chesed Society in ‎Jerusalem”.‎

Those who were granted a “loan” from the society's fund were required to transfer a pledge ‎into its possession to secure the repayment of the financial assistance.‎

החברה נוסדה בשנת 1908 על ידי הרב נפתלי צבי פרוש-גליקמן.

בשנת 1909 הקימה החברה את שכונת "שערי חסד" בחלקה המערבי של מרכז ירושלים. השכונה, הקיימת עד היום, גובלת בשכונת "רחביה" ותחומה ברחובות אוסישקין וקרן קיימת לישראל.

לצד פעילותה ברכישת קרקעות ובתכנון ובבניית בתי-מגורים, סיפקה החברה סיוע כספי למי שפנו אליה לרכישת נכסים. היו אלו הלוואות ללא-ריבית, "גמ"ח", אשר כוונו בפרט לבני המעמד הבינוני המכונה בעברית העכשווית "חרדי".

ב"ארכיון העם היהודי" שמור, בין היתר, פנקס משכונות של "קופת חברת שערי חסד גמילות חסדים הכללי בירושלים". מי שזכו לקבל "הלוואה" מקופת החברה נדרשו להעביר לרשותה משכון כדי להבטיח את פירעון הסיוע הכספי.

Rabbi Chaim Heinrich Cohn, born 1889 in Basel, Switzerland, and passed away 1966 in London, England, was a German rabbi.
At "The Central Archives for the History of the Jewish People", Jerusalem, his documents estate is preserved. Among others it includes a file of documents together with Rabbi Arthur Cohn [1862–1926], the Chief Rabbi of Basel, under the title “Hochzeitslieder” - songs/hymns for wedding ceremonies.

Not exactly. The file also includes songs/hymns for community and family events, such as Bar Mitzvah ceremonies, silver/golden weddings, and Brit-Milah ceremonies.

Among the other documents preserved there is the “Tischlied” [table song] in honor of the Brit-Milah celebration [Brismiloh-Feier] which was celebrated in Basel on Thursday, the 17th of Iyar, 5687 - May 19, 1927, for Arthur Oscher Michoel Cohn.

Arthur Cohn, who passed away in 2025 at ripe age of 98 in Jerusalem, was a Swiss-Jewish film producer, screenwriter, filmmaker and journalist who won six Academy Awards (Oscars).

הרב חיים היינריך כהן [Chaim Heinrich Cohn], נולד בשנת 1889 בבאזל, שוויץ, נפטר בשנת 1966 בלונדון, אנגליה, היה רב גרמני. ב"ארכיון המרכזי לתולדות העם היהודי", ירושלים, שמור העיזבון שלו ובו, בין היתר, תיק מסמכים יחד עם הרב ארתור כהן [1926-1862], הרב הראשי של באזל, תחת הכותרת, Hochzeitslieder , רוצה לומר, שירי/זמירות לטקסי חתונה.

לא מדויק. בתיק גם שירים/זמירות לאירועים קהילתיים ומשפחתיים כמו טקסי בר-מצווה, חתונות כסף/זהב וברית-מילה.

בין יתר המסמכים שמור שם ה-Tischlied [שיר-השלחן] לכבוד חגיגת ברית-המילה [Brismiloh-Feier] אשר נחוג בבאזל ביום חמישי, הי"ז באייר תרפ"ז, [כך במקור], 19 במאי 1927 ל-Arthur Oscher Michoel Cohn [ארתור אשר מיכאל כהן].

ארתור כהן, אשר נפטר בשנת 2025 בשיבה טובה בגיל 98 בירושלים, היה מפיק סרטים, תסריטאי, קולנוען ועיתונאי יהודי-שוויצרי אשר זכה בששה פרסי-אוסקר.

To write sources and entries for the second edition of the lexicon “Große Jüdische National-Biographie” [The Great Jewish National Biography], Solomon Wininger frequently used recycled paper. The material is preserved in about 130 files in "The Central Archives for the History of the Jewish People", Jerusalem.

The printed introduction to the German-language pamphlet that Wininger used to write the draft entry for Serge Abraomowitch Voronoff attracts unique attention. The instructions are on behalf of the Jewish Community leadership for the Yom Kippur prayers of 5693 [1932] in the "Temple", meaning, the Reform synagogue in the city.

It states there,
"For the proper and dignified conduct of the prayer service, you are politely but firmly requested to maintain appropriate silence during the prayer and the sermon, to refrain from conversations, and to enter and exit the sanctuary without noise."

Meaning, in reality, things were more complicated.

יום הכיפורים תרצ"ג [ 10-9 באוקטובר 1932]. צ'רנוביץ [Czernowitz , היום Chernivtsi באוקראינה].

לכתיבת מקורות וערכים למהדורה השנייה של הלקסיקון Große Jüdische National Biographie [הלקסיקון היהודי-הלאומי הגדול] השתמש שכיחות Solomon Wininger בניירות ממוחזרים. החומר שמור בכ-130 תיקים ב"ארכיון המרכזי לתולדות העם היהודי", ירושלים.

המבוא המודפס לפמפלט בשפה הגרמנית אשר שימש את וינינגר לכתיבת טיוטת הערך ל-Serge Abraomowitsch Voronoff מושכת תשומת לב ייחודית. ההנחיות הן מטעם נשיאות הקהילה היהודית לתפילות יום הכיפורים תרצ"ג ב"טמפל", רוצה לומר, בבית-הכנסת הרפורמי בעיר.

נאמר שם,
"למען קיומה התקין והמכובד של התפילה, הנכם מתבקשים בנימוס אך בתוקף לשמור על שקט הולם במהלך התפילה והדרשה, להימנע משיחות, ולהיכנס ולצאת מההיכל ללא רעש."

רוצה לומר, בפועל פני הדברים היו מורכבים יותר.

The Central Archives for the History of the Jewish People will be presenting at ICARUS - International Centre for Archival Research Convention #36: "Highlighting Heritage, Empowering Knowledge – From Archivists to Everyone", taking place at the National Library of Estonia in Tallinn.
On May 27 at 16:00, our colleague Daniel Edelson will deliver his talk "UROsaurus: Revealing the Untold Stories of the Shoah with LLMs".
The presentation will cover how we built an AI-powered system to analyze the URO collection – an archive of Holocaust compensation records comprising over 20,000 archival files and 4 million pages. Daniel will walk through the full journey: the technical and methodological challenges, how we developed additional tools to support archival workflows, cataloguing, and historical research, and how we approached building human-in-the-loop systems that keep human oversight at the center of the process.
