Collateral war injuries in Israel’s South
=========================================================
Founded in 1962, Arad is a city of close to 33,000 citizens. Located on the border of the Judean desert and the Negev desert Arad is the center of culture, sports and tourism in the southern part of Israel. Arad was one the first planned city in Israel, and was planned according to international urban planning standards.
During the war with Iran earlier this year, nearly all the missiles and rockets wee that were fired at Israel were miraculously shot down. Unfortunately a small number of missiles, each with deadly protentional, penetrated the near hermetic aerial shield of the Israel Air Force and struck the two Southern cities of Arad and Dimona.
Sitting 37 miles zouth of Arad is the city of Dimona. 39,500 citizens live in the city. 7,500 belong to the Indian Jewish community and thus Dimona is sometimes known by its nickname “Little India”. Roughly a third of the population works in the local industrial companies and another third in service-related industries. Main industries include Dead Sea works, textiles and a world leading companies in Solar power technologies.
Following the missile attacks in March 2026, on Arad and Dimona, residential buildings were destroyed and many were injured. In Arad, one hundred and fifteen people were physically injured and evacuated to Soroka hospital in B**r Sheva, including eighteen children. In Dimona, sixty people were wounded and were also evacuated to Soroka hospital. The IDF said the missiles carried several hundred tons of explosives.
And when such devastation to human life, families and property occurs Yad Tamar steps in . Not just for immediate emergency crisis control but also oforr ongoing holistic and therapeutic solutions. Yad Tamar creates meaningful human connections that help those most affected to recover, regain stability, move forward and never feel alone or abandoned.
Here we recount one story that began w with two elderly couples, whose lives became unexpectedly intwined as a result of the missiles falling and creating such devastating damage.
In the city of the city of Arad., beyond the physical damage caused by the missile strike, many residents were left struggling with fear, anxiety, and emotional trauma, especially older adults who had spent years living peacefully in what was once considered one of Israel's quietest cities.
Yet even in the midst of crisis, remarkable stories of healing and resilience continued to emerge. Through Yad Tamar's emergency resilience initiative, vulnerable families and elderly residents affected by the war are paired with trained volunteers who provide ongoing emotional and practical support. Yad Tamar is still actively helping with the rehabilitation of famines and individuals in Arad and Dimona (cities sometimes forgotten as efforts are focused on larger cities).
The Yad Tamar professional team identifies those in need, recruits and trains volunteers, carefully matches them, and continues to guide and support every relationship throughout the process. What begins as a volunteer assignment often becomes something much deeper - a true lifeline.
One of the most moving examples involves an older couple from Israel's Gaza Envelope communities who experienced the trauma of October 7, evacuation, and prolonged displacement firsthand. When Yad Tamar connected them with an elderly couple in Arad who were struggling to recover emotionally after the missile strike in their city, something extraordinary happened.
What started as volunteer support quickly became a genuine friendship. Long phone conversations led to a face-to-face visit in Arad. For the elderly couple in Arad, that visit carried a simple but powerful message: "You are not alone." Today, the two couples speak every day. What started as regular check-ins has become a steady source of comfort, encouragement, practical assistance, and friendship.
Beyond emotional support, the volunteer couple helps navigate bureaucracy, access benefits and services, solve everyday challenges, and provide the reassuring presence that can make all the difference during difficult times. They understand the importance of stability because they themselves have experienced its absence. Yad Tamar is there to assist at every step along the rehabilitation journey.
Thanks to Yad Tamar, people who never would have met are now speaking every day, supporting one another, and rebuilding their lives together.
