Nagaland filmmaker Theja Rio has achieved a major international milestone as his debut feature film Angh won the Platform Competition at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) 2026.

Set in 1960s Nagaland, the film tells the story of a Konyak village chief and his son as they face changes in their community, faith and traditional way of life.

The film, which features Indigenous Naga actors along with BAFTA-winning actor Douglas Henshall, was the only Indian entry in this year’s TIFF Platform Competition.

The award also makes Angh eligible for consideration in the International Feature Film category at the 2027 Academy Awards.
