What is happening right now is one for the history books.
For the first time, we're seeing a U.S. president publicly dressing down Israel and telling them to wake up from their illusions, instead of threatening sanctions against their enemies.
And this isn't because of an economic dispute. It's because a country in the Middle East managed to hit both of them where it hurts.
Trump is essentially saying: "Without me, you probably wouldn't even exist today." Then he goes on: "Why is it that every time you want to target a single person in Lebanon, you end up bringing down an entire building with everyone inside? Innocent people are losing their lives."
Imagine that—Iran teaching Trump about humanity.
He also sends a direct message to Netanyahu, suggesting that he lacks wisdom and that without Trump's support he wouldn't win elections. Trump even remarks that he'd like to see the other candidates running against him.
Meanwhile, J.D. Vance reportedly told journalists: "Every time we're close to reaching an agreement with Iran, you create a problem in Lebanon and disrupt everything. Wake up and face reality. Two-thirds of the stockpiles you use to defend yourselves are supplied by us in the first place."
The statements made by Trump and Vance are not directed only at the leadership of an allied country. Conversations between leaders can happen privately or over the phone. These remarks appear aimed at their own domestic audience, to make people realize what the author sees as the reality of the situation.
What makes it even more striking is that the United States delivered this message after Netanyahu reportedly hinted that he might act without American approval, while military officials indicated they had no intention of withdrawing from Lebanon.
According to this narrative, Washington warned that restrictions could be imposed, potentially reaching the level of an arms embargo. Just think about it: the story began with sanctions and pressure on Iran, and now it is supposedly ending with restrictions being discussed against Israel itself.
If this is not the definition of a historic defeat, then what could possibly be a clearer example?
