READ: Through longganisa and corned beef, Philippine envoy in Israel makes Filipinos feel at home
Joseph Pedrajas, MANILA BULLETIN
"On regular days, the embassy—a four-storey compact building just 10 minutes away from the beach—hosts discussions crucial in Philippine bilateral relations, processes visas, and assists Filipinos facing whatever problem they have in Israel. During active conflict, it turns into a relief warehouse.
But on June 11, it served another purpose—gather Filipinos and make them feel at home even in a different part of the world."

"It's an effort to celebrate in a modest way, despite what's happening... We hope that through this small salu-salo, [it will] provide an opportunity for us to reach out [to our kababayan] and celebrate our heritage and history."

MODEST YET MEANINGFUL: PH Embassy, Filipinos in Holy Land Celebrate 128th Independence Day in Israel
The Philippine Embassy marked the 128th Anniversary of Philippine Independence with a simple yet meaningful celebration held at the Chancery rooftop on the morning of 11 June 2026.
In view of the prevailing security situation in the region, the recent earthquake in Mindanao, and the need for practical austerity, the Embassy opted for a modest observance attended by Filipino community leaders and Embassy personnel.
Ambassador Aileen S. Mendiola-Rau led the flag-raising ceremony, followed by the singing of the Lupang Hinirang and the recitation of the Panatang Makabayan. A prayer for peace and healing was offered by Fr. Mark Palafox. A minute of silence was observed in remembrance of the lives lost in the recent earthquake in Mindanao.
“While our celebration this year is simple, we remain committed to being with our kababayan and honoring their resilience, especially in the face of recent challenges,” said Ambassador Mendiola.
Messages from President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., Secretary of Foreign Affairs Ma. Theresa P. Lazaro, Secretary of Migrant Workers Hans Leo J. Cacdac, and OWWA Administrator Patricia Yvonne “PY” Caunan were likewise presented.
The program was followed by a simple Filipino breakfast salu-salo featuring familiar agahan favorites such as ensaladang talong, longganisa, ginisang sardinas, sinangag, and tsokolate de batirol, along with traditional sorbetes in Filipino flavors such as buko, macapuno, and ube, which has recently become a global favorite.
A small exhibit on the history of the Philippine flag was also featured, highlighting its role as a rallying symbol during the Philippine Revolution and other subsequent struggles in Philippine history.
Following the brief program, Embassy operations continued as normal, remaining fully open to the public and continuing to serve walk-in clients. Complimentary merienda were offered to visitors throughout the day.
As part of its month-long Independence Day celebrations, the Embassy will also conduct consular outreach missions across Israel to bring services closer to Filipino communities and assist those affected by recent disruptions due to recent conflicts.
The Philippine Embassy in Tel Aviv and the Filipino community in the Holy Land join the nation in paying tribute to our heroes and in celebrating 128 years of Philippine independence.
Isang makabuluhang pagdiriwang ng Araw ng Kalayaan sa ating lahat. Yom Ha’atzmaut sameach!
