Higher oil prices following the conflict with Iran may have increased Russia’s export revenues in the short term. However, they do not address the structural challenges facing the Russian economy.
In the first four months of 2026, Russia’s budget deficit reached 5.9 trillion roubles – significantly above the 3.8 trillion planned for the entire year. More than 200,000 businesses have closed since January, while labour shortages, rising taxes and weakening domestic demand continue to weigh on economic activity.
Twenty packages of EU sanctions remain in force, limiting Russia’s access to technology, finance, logistics and energy markets. While temporary fluctuations in commodity prices may provide short-term relief, the long-term economic pressure continues.

Memorial ceremonies were attended by former inmates, government officials and local authorities, and included the laying of wreaths and candles at the Death Wall in the courtyard of Block 11 at the former Auschwitz I camp, according to the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum in the southern Polish city of Oświęcim.
