BREAKING: Former Supreme Court judge Justice Abhay S. Oka has said that the Election Commission of India does not have the authority to determine who is an Indian citizen and who is not.

He has also called on the Supreme Court to reconsider its decision upholding the constitutional validity of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

Air Force veteran K.P. Singh has shared his emotional experience, saying he was deeply hurt after being asked to prove his father’s Indian identity to qualify for the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process.

Singh said he had served in the Indian Air Force for 20 years, while his father had also served in the armed forces and fought in three wars. Despite their family’s service to the nation, Singh claimed that his name was removed and he was asked to provide proof of his father’s Indian identity.

His remarks came during Rahul Gandhi’s ‘Chalo Delhi’ rally, where Air Force veterans were also present.

His account has raised questions about the challenges people may face during electoral roll verification and the emotional impact of being asked to prove their identity despite years of service to the country.

The Supreme Court has rejected a plea seeking directions to give the Delhi Police a free hand to deal with protesters, stressing that the future of young students must be kept in mind. A bench led by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant observed that many protesters were young and that the Court had to consider their families and long-term future. The CJI said students should not become entangled in prolonged court proceedings. However, the Court clarified that its earlier protection orders do not extend to those alleged to be hardened criminals or accused of serious offences.
