A muffler is installed on cars and motorcycles to reduce noise from engine exhaust to a tolerable level. The unmuffled sound intensity is probably enough to cause deafness. There are mandatory rules by government which must be followed and should be satisfied when an automotive company designs a vehicle.

The rule states that " Every motor vehicle shall at all times be equipped with a muffler in good working order and in constant operation to prevent excessive or unusual noise and annoying smoke, and no person shall use a muffler cut-out, bypass, a muffler without baffles or similar device upon a motor vehicle on a highway. "

Hence, muffler is designed properly to reduce noise pollution. But at the same time it increases exhaust resistance and reduces the horsepower of engine. So a insane car lover may replace the muffler to a three way catalytic converter.

Above is the typical structure of muffler.

As explained in previous post, muffler helps to reduce noise coming out of the engine due to pressurised gases. At the outlet of the muffler, this pressure is reduced to a certain extent that noise is created within permissible limits.

Outer body of muffler is made up of steel and is coated with aluminium. Aluminium provides protection against heat. Basic idea behind designing a muffler is the sound must lose it's energy during travel hence reducing the noise. Muffler is designed in such way that opposite sound waves are created which cancel out the sound waves produced by pressurised gases.

Mufflers are mounted in line with exhaust pipe. Inside of muffler there are perforated pipes, baffles, tubes. It whole is resonating chamber. Perforated tubes and baffles are designed such way that they tune and minimize engine's sound output.
As noise comes into the muffler, the sound waves bounce around against baffles, creating opposite sound waves that cancel each other out.

The performance of a muffler is characterized using 3
different measures.
- Insertion loss
- Transmission loss
- Noise reduction
