The Students’ Federation of India (SFI) has registered a major victory in the Puducherry University Students’ Council elections. After winning 70 of the 115 seats in the first phase, SFI swept all 15 seats in the second phase held for the 15-member council.

The ABVP’s tally fell by 10 seats compared with last year, leaving it with 24 seats, while the MSF–NSUI alliance secured only 16 seats. SFI said the victory expresses solidarity with the strong protests and resistance being led by students and youth across the country against the anti-democratic policies of the Central government. Arundhati G. Nath has been elected President and P. Nallaselvan Secretary.

More than 3,000 farmers, sharecroppers and rural workers under the All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS) and Uttar Pradesh Kisan Sabha marched from Charbagh Railway Station towards the Uttar Pradesh Secretariat, pressing a range of agrarian demands. Police stopped the procession at Railway Station Square and detained over 500 participants, including AIKS National President Rajan Kshirsagar, General Secretary Ravula Venkaiah, National Treasurer Chhittar Singh, UP Kisan Sabha President Imtiaz Beg and State General Secretary and former MLA Rajendra Yadav. Other leaders, including State Vice President Randhir Singh, later gathered at Eco Garden in protest.

The Kisan Sabha said preventive arrests had begun a day earlier, with farmer leaders detained in Ayodhya and Sonbhadra on October 6, including senior leader Ashok Tiwari. The protest demanded a legal guarantee for MSP at C2+50%, higher procurement prices for paddy, wheat and potatoes, ₹738 per quintal for sugarcane with payment of arrears, complete farm-loan waivers, drought relief, restoration and expansion of MGNREGA, opposition to power privatisation and smart meters, and protection of voting rights. Leaders warned that arrests would not silence farmers and threatened a wider statewide movement if the demands remain unaddressed.
