Surprised Destiny

The siren was wailing as the ambulance entered the hospital premises. Right after it came to a stop, there were ward boys with the rolling stretcher running towards the back of the Ambulance. They transferred the patient from the Ambulance to the stretcher and within minutes, the ICU on the 4th floor opened doors for the stretcher. The patient was unconscious, actually has been in the same state for the past hour. The Orthopedic surgeon, a Cardiologist, and a team of nurses rushed into the ICU. After about ten minutes, one of the nurses came out to the room. “Are you the one who came with the patient?” asked the nurse staring at the man who was standing a few feet from the ICU doors with his back to the wall. “Yes Sister,” said Dinesh. Before he could inquire about the health of his grandfather who was lying on the ICU bed, the nurse placed a prescription on Dinesh's hand and asked him to get the medicines at the earliest. “How is he doing...” started Dinesh, but the nurse cut him short. “I can't tell anything now. The Doctor will let you know in some time. Could you please get the medicine soon” said the nurse and rushed in.
Dinesh hurried to the pharmacy which was all the way to the ground floor and got all the medicines. There was a lot of crowd near the Lift and he decided to take the flight of stairs. After climbing the 96 steps, he reached the ICU and peeped through the transparent hole of the doors and gave a knock. This time another nurse came out and collected the medicines. She as well went back in without giving Dinesh a chance to ask anything.
The worried grandson saw through the door, his grandfather lying on the bed with lots of wires running from his chest and hands to some machines he remembered using during his college practicals. The old man was kept him in life-support as he was struggling to breathe at that instance. Dinesh could not bear the sight of his grandfather fighting with his life and turn away from the door.
The next 25 minutes seemed more or so like an hour. The doors opened and the doctor walked out. A worried Dinesh brought up some courage and walked towards the doctor. “How is he, Doctor? Is he going to be alright?”. Dinesh knew his grandfather turned 91 only a month ago. “I'm not going to lie to you. Operating on the spinal cord on a 90-year old is never recommended. Since you forced us and also your grandfather's medical report was supportive enough with no Diabetes or BP or any other ailments, we went ahead with the operation last year. And now this Heart Attack. At present we won't be able to tell anything. Let the man rest for at least 24 hours. I'll assess then. And Dinesh, I feel sorry for you. Let's hope for the best” said the doctor, patted Dinesh on the shoulder, and walked away leaving Dinesh without any words.
Dinesh took a minute to collect his resolve and walked to his grandmother who he kept seated on a nearby bench. His Grandmother, unlike her husband, has the usual medical issues which any other woman of her age might have. Dinesh is worried about her High Blood Pressure at the moment and given the fact that her husband is fighting for his life, she became very down in the past hour or so.
Dinesh slowly walked towards her and placed a hand on her palm. “Amma, I just talked to the doctor. Appa is going to be just fine. He is just resting. We'll be able to see him in a few hours. Don't worry about anything. Everything is going to be alright” said Dinesh. His grandmother gave a small smirk and said "I've seen five to six generations Kanna. I will know the difference between truth and a lie by just looking at your eyes. I'm your amma da". Dinesh was speechless for a few seconds. He then hugged his grandmother and without his knowledge, he started sobbing thinking about both his grandparents. His grandmother then consoled him and brought him back to normal. A minute or two back, he stepped up to console his Amma, but at the end of the day always parents end up giving helping hands to their kids.
There was one other thing worrying Dinesh. Just a week back they held the baby shower function for his wife who was pregnant for a second time. His first child was a girl, but he lost the girl when she was a year old in an accident. Including himself, everyone in the family was expecting a baby girl whom they believed will be the first child they lost to be reborn.
Dinesh lost his father when he was a kid. In a few years, his mother as well passed away. Since the untimely death of his mother, his grandparents have been taking care of Dinesh. It is them who brought him up to who he is. That is the reason why he started calling them 'Amma' and 'Appa'. Time doesn't stop for anyone and some things like aging are inevitable. Still, when things happen to us, we blame misfortune.
Dinesh got lost in his train of thought. He started remembering all the days he used to happily roam about with his grandpa, all the pampering. His Grandpa has always been his Hero, Role-model, and inspiration. All the bed-time stories his grandpa used to come up with to get him to sleep, he still is puzzled how someone who isn't educated can come up with that many stories on the go. Had he been a writer, though Dinesh and smiled to himself. His grandma was a government employee until the day she retired. So it was always his grandpa who was there for Dinesh throughout his childhood. From feeding Dinesh to raising him with all the good principles and discipline.
He suddenly came out of his thoughts as a nurse rushed from the ICU to fetch the doctor. He heard something about the pulse going below normal. The Doctor along with the nurse rushed into the ICU. Dinesh just couldn't digest what is happening in front of him. He prayed to God that his grandpa should be back on his feet.
Given that he is going to be a father again in a month or two, one of his wishes was that his grandpa should hold his daughter in his hands and raise her with the same care and love with which he raised Dinesh.
With everything happening right now, he started thinking about the worst. He was struck in a sense of dilemma. He now wished if his wife would give birth to a son who might be his grandpa. So that like how his grandpa raised Dinesh, he will get a chance to repay by raising his grandpa as his own son.
He glanced at his grandma. She always keeps complaining that everyone including Dinesh always thinks only about his grandpa and cared for him. She often feels bad there is no one to think of her. It wasn't her choice but without the job, she wouldn't have been able to provide for the family. Although Dinesh had an affection and respect towards his grandma, he may have terribly failed to showcase that. With his grandpa it was always different, things came naturally.
Many hours passed with all the waiting and flashback memories. After some time, “Doctor wishes to have a word with you” said the nurse walking up to him. Dinesh took one flight of stairs down to the 3rd floor to the Doctor's room. That was when he got a call. He heard his mother-in-law informing about his wife Akshaya suddenly went into labor pain and they are bringing her to the same hospital where he is now.

Dinesh suddenly couldn't think straight. Should he need to worry about his grandpa who is fighting for his life, or his grandma who is blaming herself sitting out, or his wife who is going to be in premature labor? Pushing all thoughts aside for the moment, he entered the doctor's cabin. “Come, sit down Dinesh,” said the doctor. Dinesh did not ask anything and let the doctor continue. “Sorry, Dinesh. There isn't much improvement with your grandpa, the body doesn't seem to accept the medication and at his age, we could not risk increasing the dosage. We also need to consider his age. You might as well inform your kith and kin. I'm sorry Dinesh. At this point beyond medicines, only the will power of the patient could help him recover. Dinesh checked with the doctor if he could visit his grandpa and have a word with him. The doctor allowed it.
Dinesh informed his grandma about Akshaya's situation and what the doctor said about his grandpa. His grandma did not respond and was filled in her own thoughts. She knew the end of the day all will be for good. Fate has its own course and what we wish for might have no role in destiny.
As he got a call from his mother-in-law who said they are almost near the hospital, Dinesh received Akshaya at the hospital entrance and started rolling the stretcher to the labor ward. All the while he was holding her hand and was constantly repeating everything was going to be alright. When the stretcher was pulled into the ward, he had to let go of her hand which he never could that easily. He then walked back to ICU to visit his superhero. Even Though he wasn't sure if his grandpa was listening to anything he said, he did not mind and continued to talk about everything that was running inside him. He went on and on about every happy memory from his childhood, what he learned from the old man, how he missed him already. He could hear some beep tones in the nearby monitoring machine. The nurse said there seem to be some improvement in pulse and urged him to keep talking.
He continued to talk about the courage and will-power he learned from his grandpa after the incident in their family. How stubborn an old man could be. His grandpa after a fight with his two sons decided not to give even a penny to his sons and said all he had was his grandson. From then on his grandpa's wish was to raise Dinesh to a better man and see him settle with his own family and give him a great-grandchild to pamper.
He told his grandpa about Akshaya being admitted to the same hospital and he wishes him to regain consciousness and get back to normal so that he can hold his great-grand child like he always wished for.
After sitting with his grandpa for few more minutes, he ran back to check on his wife. He could hear nothing from the labor ward where his wife was present. He patiently waited. His grandmother was now running between the labor ward and her husband's room and finally,y when weariness took over, she went back to the bench she was sitting earlier and tried to get some rest.
Dinesh then got a call from the 4th floor where his grandpa was in ICU. He rushed back to hear some happy news after all. There was some improvement in his grandpa's state. He thanked the doctor and moved away from the ICU, that was when his mother-in-law called. He started running to the stairs and before he could hear 4 rings he ran and reached the labor ward on the 5th floor itself. His mother-in-law was smiling at him and when he walked near her she told him that it was a girl.
Dinesh was overwhelmed. He remembered his grandma's words, everything that happens will be for good. He walked into the labor ward to see his princess. The nurse had taken the baby for cleaning. He sat next to his wife and held her hand with both his hands and took it to his mouth and kissed it. That was when the nurse brought back the baby. After talking to his wife for a few minutes, he took the baby to his grandpa but the doctors did not allow for the baby to be taken into the ICU. So he took his princess to his grandma.
“Amma, it's a girl. Just like you said, all is turning out good. Appa is also getting better. Here hold your great-granddaughter” said Dinesh. But his grandma did not try to take the baby from his hands. That was when he realized. Turns out Dinesh was blessed with his grandmother as his baby girl. He cried out loud “Why did you have to leave us thinking no one cared for you”.
