Volunteering, for me was just an escape from the harsh realities and the pressure at work. I’ve always wanted to work for a cause I believed in. Then, Thayimane happened. Thayimane is an orphanage located in the outskirts of Bangalore, very close to Sarjapura Road. It was a weekend plan for everyone; to go to an orphanage, donate some food, click selfies and be back. What we didn't know was that normalcy was something that these kids that we were going to meet didn’t know about. These were the kids who were born not knowing the love of a parent and the comfort of a home. When we arrived at the place, their eyes lit up as there was nothing else they would rather see. Later we got to know that we were the first guests in months to come to the place. We sat, and talked with the lot of them. We distributed the food that we brought, and ordered some more to make sure that nobody was left hungry. The kids couldn't stop thanking us for this. We read them stories, played them some songs, danced with them. And then, it was time for us to leave. The look of immense sadness was visible on all of their faces. The question was when will they have such a time again? Running an orphanage is no easy task. Feeding and looking after a 100 children takes an amazing amount of dedication and love. I respect Thayimane for doing it for years, but at the same time I would like to say something. Why were we the only ones to visit them in months? This part of Bangalore is densely populated, yes. People do have time on their hands to make plans for the weekend, yes. Then why doesn’t anybody dedicate but one hour of their time to help these kids?
