A heartfelt welcome to the new members of Harsha Trust!

A 3-day program for Harsha Trust’s new joiners’ Batch 2022-23 took place from 15th May to 17th May at . The participants received a general overview of the organization's Mission, Vision, and Values. As the new members of Harsha Trust have arrived from many different domains, they received demonstrations through various fun games and activities of the different community development programs of Harsha Trust and what will be the role of the new joiners in transforming the lives of the rural poor.

harsha trust Team has supported 160 rural marginal farmers with key inputs and pieces of training on . The farmers from 15 villages of Jagatsinghpur and district cultivate local seasonal desi vegetables, fruit plantation, and backyard poultry rearing with the support of Parivartan .

Although poultry rearing was common in these areas, it never was profitable due to following traditional poultry-rearing practices with unhygienic conditions. Now the farmers are receiving regular technical training and key inputs according to their needs. The promotion of and other improved poultry-rearing activities have reduced Feed Consumption Ratio ( ) and enhanced their income.

Now the farmers earn profits up to Rs. 2,000 to 3,000 every month. Varieties such as , , , and Bird are marketed for Rs. 140 to 150 per KG. The local , Swayan Swadhina Farmer Producer Company Ltd. ( ) is supplying feed and helping the farmers with marketing.

New are in progress at Kadomali, Jamguda, Mangliguda, and Manikguda, the four different villages of block of district. In these villages and households, we have just started our intervention. The Poshan Sathis who are helping the farmers with the setup and the technical knowledge such as crop selection and various other intracultural knowledge have just received intensive training and detailed demonstration from Harsha Trust .

The farmers brought their own seeds and used the leftover seeds from the last season. The rectangular model of Nutri-Garden was chosen in view of its convenience and effectiveness as it utilizes the small backyard land.

The crops grown organically without the use of any chemical pesticides and fertilizers will now take care of the whole family’s requirement for the year to come.

The participants received intensive and in-depth training on improved cultivation, effective Storage, better processing, packaging, value addition, and marketing of sugarcane. More specifically the focus was on attracting farmers to production without the use of any chemicals, color, Urea, etc. There was also detailed capacity-building training on the Value Addition of .

Labor Day greetings!

Agriculture accounts for 45.6% of the workforce in India and in rural India almost up to 84% of women depend on agriculture for their livelihood. But still, women are not recognized as farmers. This Labor Day let us look at the life and livelihoods of women farmers through a different lens.

Prakash Nayak of village, block cultivated 2 years ago using traditional methods which caused him to experience significant losses due to pest and disease attacks and his lack of knowledge of improved farming methods.
Now he is cultivating pointed gourd on 60 cents (0.6 acres) of his land which is adjacent to the Devi River bank with trellis method. With the help of advanced methods of farming, he has been able to sell pointed gourd for 80 rupees per kg at the local market. In the last two weeks, he earned around Rs. 50,000. He is estimating his total income in the upcoming weeks to be around two lakhs.

Meet Mrs. Fulmati Kindo, member of the Khusi Producer Group ( ) of village, Block, . She along with 2 other PG members cultivated Watermelon, Cucumber, and Tomato in 4-acres of rented land. She earned an income of Rs. 20,000 within 15 days of harvesting, and produce worth Rs. 10,000 was solely bought by different members of her PG. In the upcoming month of May, she expects to earn a total income of Rs. 50,000.

Harsha Trust with the support of and Parivartan initiative has installed 40 in 8 Primary Schools, 5 Upper Primary schools, 11 High schools, and 3 Anganwadi Centres of block. Earlier the students used to spend the whole day with the little water that they used to bring from home or had to depend on unsafe tap water.

A sharing and exchange on was organized at on Securing Nutrition and Enhancing Resilience ( ) program on 19th April 2023. The participants received orientation on Community Nutrition Gardens ( ) and shared many successful models of CNGs implemented in the community. The (BMZ) team, team, harsha trust, Self-Reliant Initiatives through Joint Action(SRIJAN), Pradan, and various Government delegates were present at the event.

135 farmers have received poultry inputs worth Rs. 12,500 in four villages of block, district. The farmers of the villages , , , and of Kandra Gram Panchayat ( ) received one cage, 25 chicks, 30 kg feed, and a set of two feeder and drinker each in convergence with Integrated Tribal Development Agency ( ) Programme.

Having direct environmental and economic advantages Jagatsinghpur Team with the support of Parivartan and project is making concerted efforts to promote vermicomposting by providing training and vermicompost pits to marginal farmers. Now it is adopted by 60 farmers in Jagatsinghpur block.
