It was a privilege to take on the role of moderator for such an erudite panel of speakers, from sectors as varied as education to rehabilitation to automobile to psychiatry. Some of the most eminent names in advocacy for the differently abled persons, were on the panel and it was so enriching to have a meaningful dialogue with them.

I participated as a jury member to evaluate short films on women empowerment at the short film competition organised by women’s organisation, SWAR, during their Nari Shakti@ViksitOdisha conclave last week. I thank the entire team and especially Chandana Das apa, who has been an inspiring presence in my life. She is more of a family member and Im touched that she entrusted this responsibility to me. The key to a developed Odisha is through upliftment of women, by removing barriers to their growth and giving them opportunities that are rightfully theirs. It was an enriching experience listening to accomplished women leaders and esteemed guests from various walks of life.

Unfortunately ignorance still prevails in some parts of India where its convenient to blame the parents (mostly mother), for ‘causing autism ’ due to her faulty nurturing. Genes and science dont matter it seems!

I push back every single time I hear that a working mother, an emotionless mother, covid time increase in screentime and a host of such nonsense reasons cause an intellectual and developmental disability.

Its important to fight this harmful narrative even if its said jokingly. The mother does not cause autism. Its either present in a child or its not. Research is still unable to find the cause of it.
