Patrode leaves (Colocasia🥬leaves)
✓ Patra, also known as pataude (पतौड़े) in some regions of India, is a very popular steam cooked snack. This dish is made with Colocasia leaves (in Hindi the leaves are known as arbi ke patte).
✓ Patrode is easily digestible. As they are rich in dietary fibres they help in easy bowel movement.
✓ The plant has antifungal and antiviral properties that will help you treat several infections on the body.
✓ It can help you have a good control on cholesterol. Respiratory disorders like cold and asthma can be cured by the oil extracted from Bel Patra.
✓ This can produce a burning sensation and irritation when handled with bare hands or consumed in its raw form. Hence, one should wear gloves while cooking it. Taro root consumption may cause the formation of kidney stones and gout, accompanied by some other health issues.
✓ Iron rich Colocasia leaves help in improving the hemoglobin. The leaves contain phenols, tannins, flavonoids, glycosides, sterols which help in reducing chronic inflammation such as rheumatoid arthritis.
✓ Therefore, the main limitation of the use of taro leaves as a vegetable for humans is the presence of oxalates which can form non-absorbable salts with Ca, Fe and Mg, rendering these minerals unavailable [9] and increasing the risk of kidney stone formation when excess oxalates are excreted by the kidneys
✓ Soaking the raw leaves in water for 30 min marginally reduces the soluble oxalate content by leaching into the tap water. Soaking for 18 h results in a 26% reduction in the soluble oxalate content of the raw leaves.
