Vijayakanth (Tamil: விஜயகாந்த்; born Vijayaraj Azhagarswami 25 August 1952) is an Indian actor and politician. He is the founder of the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam and a Member of Legislative Assembly representing Rishivandiyam, Tamil Nadu, India. Vijayakanth has appeared in more than 150 movies. He was awarded an honorary doctorate in December 2010 for his services to the poor and needy. Early life
VIJAYKANTH, a force to reckon with in tn politics:. Assisting his father in running the family rice mill in a dusty street in Madurai town in
southern Tamil Nadu, young Vijayaraj, a crazy fan of matinee idol MGR, preferred to go to watch MGR, rather than listen to his real teachers at school. The youth with unkempt hair relished re-enacting film scenes to his friends, but never dreamt of making it big in the Tamil film industry. Vijayaraj, a school dropout, was a star among his friends due to his philanthropic nature. He was also known to be humane and used to freely mingle with workers in his rice mill and even share his food with them. Even when young, Vijayaraj juggled his time between managing the mill and pursuing his passion for movies. A Madurai-based film distributor who was planning to make movies took him to Chennai, the destination of all starry-eyed youths, in 1976. However, the dream factory did not embrace the dark, 24-year-old with hardy, unsophisticated looks. Seen as another actor in the Rajnikanth mould, Vijayaraj was cast alongside the emerging superstar in En Kelvikku Enna Pathil (What is the answer to my question), but was dumped. Many refused to act with him and big banner film-makers did not come forward to do movies with him. Fortune finally favoured him after he was rechristened Vijayakanth and got to play the protagonist in Inikkum Ilamai (Sweet Youth) in 1979. Not one to look back after that, he went on to feature in several hits and became one of the top heroes in Tamil, acting in more than 150 films. He won the sobriquet captain after his blockbuster movie Captain Prabhakaran. Vijayakanth was born as Vijayaraj on 25 August 1952 in Madurai to K. Alagarswami was Madurai's Councillor for two terms. Upon entering the film industry to pursue an acting career, director Khaja (who directed his first film) changed his name to "Amirtaraj" and then "Vijayakanth", dropping the "raj" out of his name and suffixing "kanth". He has also been nicknamed "Captain" (after his film Senthoorapoove in 1988 acted as a army captain role) and "Puratchi Kalaignar". He is known as "Karuppu MGR" among his fans. 2011 Tamilnadu election his party DMDK won 29 seats out of 41 contested seats and he became the leader of opposition. Education

Main article: Vijayakanth filmography
Vijayakanth has acted in 153 movies, in which many films featured him as a cop. Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) (Tamil: தேசிய முற்போக்கு திராவிடக் கழகம் meaning National Progressive Dravidian Federation) is a regional political party formed by Tamil film actor Vijayakanth in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu along the lines of the regional Dravidian political parties. He formally announced party formation on September 14, 2005 at Madurai. The party head office is in Koyambedu, Chennai. This party contested in all 234 seats in the state elections in May 2006 with Vijayakanth contesting in Vridhachalam. The party polled almost 3 million votes (about 10% share). All the candidates of the DMDK with the exception of Vijayakanth lost the elections in 2006. In by-elections to Madurai Central assembly constituency DMDK secured around 17000 votes which is 2000 votes less than All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (ADMK). DMDK was also able to secure a large number of seats in Local Body elections. Vijaykanth and his party contested in the 2009 Lok Sabha polls as an independent party in all 39 constituencies in the state, winning no seats. The party won 29 seats in the 2011 assembly election and became the official opposition party with Vijayakanth as the opposition leader.
2009 Lok Sabha Election:
DMDK contested all 39 seats independently in Tamil Nadu in the 15th Lok Sabha election and lost all of them. The party, however, made strong inroads in the heartland of Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK). The party polled 30.73 lakh votes of the total of 3.02 crore valid votes polled in the state representing roughly a vote share of 10.09%. This is higher than the 8.38% vote share polled by him during the 2006 assembly election. It polled more than one lakh votes in nine constituencies, more than 75,000 in 19 constituencies and more than 50,000 in 35 constituencines including Puduchery. Though his party did not win any seat, it appears to have made the difference between winning and losing for several candidates by having a vote share larger than the margin of victory. Except S. Austin in Kanyakumari and K. Pandiarajan in Virudhunagar constituency, none of the other candidates had a standing of their own and observers believe the votes polled by him indicate the public support for his candidacy.
2011 assembly election:
DMDK had remained unaligned and contested all the previous elections independently until 2011 election. In an effort — claimed by the party — to defeat the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, it allied with Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam front in a decision made on February 25, 2011. It won 29 of the 41 seats contested making it a second largest party in Tamilnadu next only to its ally ADMK pushing DMK to third position. Thus, the party became the official opposition party with Vijayakanh becoming the opposition leader. The large victory also earned recognition and a permanent election symbol from the election commission. Electoral performance:
