The 24th Sanjay Kumar Singh Memorial Lecture was organised on Sunday at the Hari Singh Auditorium of the Indira Gandhi National Forest Academy (IGNFA), Dehradun, in a solemn event.
Lt. Gen. Gurmit Singh, PVSM, UYSM, AVSM, VSM (Retd), Hon’ble Governor of Uttarakhand graced the occasion as the Chief Guest and delivered the Memorial Lecture.
The ceremony formally began with the National Song and National Anthem, setting the tone for a dignified and reflective occasion followed by the ceremonial lamp lighting and floral tributes by the Chief Guest and other dignitaries to Late Shri Sanjay Kumar Singh, IFS, whose life and sacrifice in the line of duty continue to inspire generations of forest officers.
As part of the commemorative proceedings, the Director, IGNFA, Smt Bharati, felicitated the parents of Late Shri Sanjay Kumar Singh by presenting them with a shawl as a mark of deep respect, honour, and collective gratitude for their son’s exemplary service and supreme sacrifice. The gesture was received with heartfelt appreciation and stood as one of the most moving moments of the event. Dr. Ghanshyam Narayan Singh, father of Late Shri Sanjay Kumar Singh shared their reminiscences, recalling his dedication, integrity, and commitment to duty.
On the occasion, five groups of IFS Officer Trainees were felicitated by the Hon’ble Governor of Uttarakhand in recognition of their outstanding performance and achievements during training.
Delivering the Memorial Lecture, the Hon’ble Governor highlighted the critical importance of sustainable forest management, particularly in fragile mountain ecosystems, and underscored the vital role of community participation in conservation initiatives.
He spoke about challenges such as illegal mining, encroachment, forest fires, unsustainable exploitation of natural resources, and human-wildlife conflict, urging young officers to respond with professionalism, innovation, empathy, and moral courage. He also emphasised the values of discipline, patience, balanced decision-making, and selfless service, while calling upon them to uphold the finest traditions of the Indian Forest Service. He said that compiling a book on the sacrifice and dedication of the late Sanjay Singh would be a good step towards learning from his life. He also urged the Forest Department to be more compassionate towards forest-dependent communities and wildlife.
The programme concluded with the National Song and National Anthem. The Memorial Lecture reaffirmed the enduring legacy of Late Shri Sanjay Kumar Singh and the commitment of the National Forest Academy to nurturing officers of impeccable integrity, competence, and compassion dedicated to safeguarding the nation’s forests and natural heritage. He said that preparing a book on the sacrifice and dedication of late Sanjay Singh would be a good step towards learning from his life.
Alongside the Director, IGNFA, the event was attended in large numbers by officials including Shri Ranjan Kumar Mishra, PCCF & HoFF Uttarakhand; Shri Raj Kumar Bajpai, Additional Director, IGNFA; Dr. Bhanudas Pingale, Principal Incharge, CASFoS Dehradun, Heads and officers of Central Govt Institutions at Dehradun, senior officers of the Indian Forest Service of Uttarakhand Forest Department, IFS Probationers of 2025 batch, veteran IFS officers; scientists, researchers and scholars from FRI, FRI (Deemed) University, UPES and Graphic Era University, Faculty members of IGNFA, CASFoS Dehradun, and staff of IGNFA, reflecting the wide respect and collective commitment of the forestry and academic community towards the legacy of Late Shri Sanjay Kumar Singh.
