PSYA stands firmly with the students of Jamia Millia Islamia who are demanding the immediate restoration of the Jamia Millia Islamia Students’ Union (JMISU). The university administration cannot deny students democratic representation indefinitely. For nearly two decades, Jamia students have been without an elected students’ union, leaving them without an accountable body to raise their issues of hostels, fees, food, welfare, harassment, admissions, and academic life. The demand for JMISU is not a privilege to be conceded by the administration—it is a fundamental democratic right of the student community. The students’ ongoing protests have compelled the administration to announce that union elections may be held within 15 days of the approval of the union’s constitution. But this is not a concrete guarantee. Unless the administration fixes a clear date for approving the constitution and for conducting elections, these are just words.
PSYA demands a written, time-bound election calendar, democratic participation of students in drafting the constitution, and free, fair, and universal elections without exclusion or discrimination. We demand immediate restoration of JMISU through free, fair, and inclusive elections. JMI admin should announce a definite election schedule, including the date of constitution approval, nominations, campaigning, polling, counting, and results.They must ensure democratic student participation in drafting and approving the JMISU constitution. Students can not be punished for demanding basic democracy. PSYA demands the immediate withdrawal of all actions against protesting students. There must be no apology demanded from students for asserting their right to organise and elect their own representatives.
