AIJAZ AHMAD MEMORIAL STUDY CIRCLE (AAMSC- SAU) invites you for an online lecture on Nationalism, Syncretic Food Culture: Tracing A Way by Dr. Kancha Ilaiah.
Date & Time: October 8, 5:00 pm IST Via Zoom. Meeting link will be shared soon.
Food is political. Be it the casteist segregation through imposition of vegetarianism or the brahminical derision of meat-eating. Let us hear from Kancha Ilaiah on the political discourse on the food culture amidst rising right wing nationalism.
Dr. Kancha Ilaiah Shepherd is an Indian political theorist, writer and activist for Dalit rights. He is a major figure in the ideological movement against the Indian caste system and has been instrumental in internationalizing Dalit–Bahujan issues. Born into a Shudra family in the village of Papaiahpet, in what is now Telangana and was earlier part of the princely state of Hyderabad, he and his brother were the first in the family to gain literacy and a formal education, and to move away from their traditional occupation of shepherding.
Dr. Shepherd has published numerous deep and damning examinations of caste, including Why I am not a Hindu (1996) and Buffalo Nationalism: A Critique of Spiritual Fascism (2004), that have led to threats and attacks against him throughout his career.
Do join us in large numbers!

Administration concedes to the housekeeping staff’s demand of hiring additional workers, following the intervention of AAMSC members. Previously, only three women were available to manage the girls’ hostel floor. Due to the lack of adequate number of staff, these workers were under immense strain.
The housekeeping staff was also not provided with basic safety equipments, such as gloves, polytene bags etc, in their job. The administration has agreed to restock these items. The admin has also assured they will increase the number of trash bins in the girls’ hostel.

Revolutionary greetings to the protesting students and youth of Bangladesh who had flocked to the streets, raising their voices against the inflation and corruption– issues that have plagued the lives of the masses. We also condemn the State-sponsored police brutality inflicted on them. The revolutionary masses across the world are rising up against the IMF imposed neo-liberal death machine that is the modern capitalist-imperialist state!

It is reprehensible that the university mandated foreign national students to sign an undertaking that demands they restrain from partaking in “illegal activities”– such as journalism and political demonstrations– that could negatively affect India’s interests or could prove as “embarrassing India’s relation” with other countries.
The university loses sigh of the fact that SAU, though situated territorially within India, however remains an intergovernmental institution formed by the SAARC countries. An undertaking that only considers India’s interests is therefore, not aligned with the constitutional structure of this university. In addition to this, barring students from engaging in journalistic and political pursuits is an authoritarian clause, and inappropriate to a trans- regional university. AAMSC condemns the content of the undertaking, and demand the university to retract it.
