YELEWATA MUST NOT BE REDUCED TO A GRAVE OF BROKEN PROMISES. BUILD YELEWATA NOW....

June 13 must be remembered in Benue State, but remembrance alone is not enough.

Government condolences do not rebuild homes. Speeches do not restore livelihoods. Ceremonies do not heal shattered communities. YELEWATA stands today as a wounded testimony that grief without action becomes abandonment, and memory without reconstruction becomes cruelty disguised as concern.

The survivors cannot survive on promises. They require shelters that restore human dignity, not temporary relief that prolongs instability. They require schools that bring life back to broken futures, healthcare systems that respond to trauma with urgency, livelihoods that restore independence, and security that ends the cycle of fear. Every delay in meaningful action deepens suffering, and every postponement compounds injustice already endured.

Those entrusted with rebuilding Yelewata carry a responsibility that cannot be reduced to administrative routine. It is a moral obligation weighed by conscience and judged by history.

This responsibility demands urgency, integrity, and an uncompromising respect for human dignity. It rejects political performance, bureaucratic stagnation, and any attempt to turn tragedy into opportunity for personal gain.

True leadership is not defined by declarations made after catastrophe, but by the tangible restoration of lives shattered by it. It is measured in rebuilt homes, reopened classrooms, restored healthcare access, and secured communities. Future no will not remember the volume of speeches delivered by government officials in the aftermath of suffering; they will remember whether those speeches were followed by action or abandoned to silence.

Accountability must extend beyond those who directly perpetrated violence. It must also confront the quieter but equally destructive forces of corruption, negligence, and institutional indifference. Those who enable the disappearance of public resources meant for the rebuilding of YELEWATA, those who remain silent while systems fail, and those who treat collective suffering as background noise are all part of the chain that prolongs injustice. When trust is broken at this level, recovery becomes slower, heavier, and more painful.
The people of Yelewata are not asking for pity. They are demanding dignity. They are demanding justice that is not symbolic but real, visible in reconstruction, measurable in delivery, and immediate in impact.

They are demanding a future not held hostage by inefficiency, corruption, or neglect.

Let June 13 remain permanently etched in national conscience as a warning and a reminder: remembrance without reconstruction is complicity. Every promise made to Yelewata must be fulfilled without delay. Every resource allocated must be transparently accounted for. Every institution responsible for recovery must operate under strict standards of accountability, with no tolerance for diversion or negligence.

The dead deserve remembrance.
The survivors deserve justice.
The displaced deserve restoration.

And Yelewata deserves more than sympathy from the government it deserves decisive rebuilding, carried out with urgency and humanity.

June 13, YELEWATA DAY is fast approaching.

A day to remember the innocent.

A day to confront negligence.

A day to demand accountability.

A day to rebuild what the enemies destroyed.

A day to ensure that silence never triumphs over responsibility again.

GOVERNMENT IS A CONTINUOUS PROCESS: CREDIT MUST BE GIVEN WHERE IT IS DUE

There is a tendency in politics to view every achievement through the narrow prism of partisanship. Yet, history demands a higher standard. It rewards facts, honours results, and preserves the legacies of those who dared to build when circumstances were far less favourable.

What is today acclaimed by many as the finest palace in Sub-Saharan Africa did not materialise through chance, nor was it the product of extraordinary financial abundance. It was conceived and executed during a period when Benue State's monthly allocation stood at approximately ₦3 billion—a figure that pales in comparison with the resources available in subsequent years. Nevertheless, under the leadership of Samuel Ortom, a bold vision was pursued, demonstrating that genuine development is driven more by purpose than by the size of the treasury.

Constructed alongside the palace of the Och’Idoma, this magnificent edifice represents far more than bricks, mortar and architectural splendour. It stands as a profound statement of respect for traditional institutions, cultural identity and the historical heritage of the people. These palaces are enduring assets whose significance transcends politics, serving as monuments that future generations will inherit with pride.

Remarkably, these projects were not isolated undertakings. They formed part of a broader developmental philosophy anchored in permanence rather than publicity. Across the state, investments were made in infrastructure, public institutions and strategic initiatives designed to create lasting value. They were conceived not for electoral cycles but for posterity.

It is easy to criticise from a distance; it is far more difficult to conceive, fund and complete projects that withstand the test of time. While opinions may differ regarding policy choices and priorities, the evidence of tangible achievement remains undeniable. The true measure of leadership lies not in political slogans but in enduring contributions to society.

This is precisely why the contributions of Samuel Ortom deserve objective recognition. One need not be a political ally to acknowledge accomplishment, just as one need not be a political opponent to deny it. Fair-minded observers understand that credit should be accorded wherever it is earned.

Governance is, by its very nature, a continuum. No administration inherits a blank slate, and none departs having fulfilled every aspiration of the people. Sustainable development occurs when succeeding governments consolidate existing gains, complete inherited projects and build upon established foundations. States progress when continuity triumphs over political rivalry.

A mature society does not erase yesterday's achievements to advance today's narratives. Rather, it preserves institutional memory, celebrates genuine accomplishments and encourages a culture where service to the public is valued above political expediency.

In the final analysis, history remembers builders. It remembers those who transformed vision into reality, who left behind structures, institutions and legacies that continue to serve the people long after they have left office. In that regard, the achievements associated with Samuel Ortom's administration deserve not only acknowledgement but a rightful place in the continuing story of Benue State's development.

‎PDP CHALLENGES GOV. ALIA TO ACCOUNT FOR N1.2 TRILLION RECEIVED IN THREE YEARS, DEMANDS TRANSPARENCY

‎We read with dismay the rejoinder issued by Tersoo Kula, the supposed spokesperson to the Executive Governor of Benue State, Revd. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, wherein he once again resorted to peddling falsehoods while deliberately avoiding the critical questions being asked by Benue citizens who desire accountability and transparency in governance.

‎Ordinarily, we would not have considered it necessary to respond to Tersoo Kula, whom we understand is still struggling to come to terms with the outcome awaiting the Governor Alia faction following the controversial and widely condemned APC primaries conducted in Benue State. However, for the sake of the unsuspecting public, it has become imperative to set the record straight.

‎Any resident of Benue State from 2023 to date can attest to the unfortunate reality that the state has never experienced such hardship and insecurity as it has under the administration of Revd. Fr. Hyacinth Alia. Insecurity has worsened alarmingly, forcing many citizens into poverty and displacement. Governance under the current administration has been characterised by deception, excuses, and endless blame games aimed at covering up glaring failures.

‎It is a matter of public record that since assuming office as Governor of Benue State, Revd. Fr. Hyacinth Alia has consistently failed to disclose to the people the actual amount being spent on salaries, the true figures of the state's Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), and the monthly allocations accruing to the state from the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC). This lack of transparency is particularly disappointing given that Governor Alia campaigned in 2023 on promises of openness and accountability in governance.

‎Sadly, despite reportedly receiving over N1.2 trillion within the last three years, the Alia administration has failed to translate such huge funds into meaningful development for the people of Benue State. Instead, governance at the grassroots has virtually collapsed, while citizens continue to suffer from poor infrastructure, economic hardship, and lack of access to their farms due to insecurity.

‎We therefore ask: where exactly did the 2027 Benue State Governor-in-waiting, Chief Michael Kaase Aondoakaa, SAN, lie in his remarks? Rather than addressing the pertinent issues raised by Dr. Terver Akase regarding the state's wage bill, Internally Generated Revenue, and FAAC accruals, Tersoo Kula chose the familiar path of propaganda and misinformation, which has become the trademark of the current administration.

‎Just yesterday, Tersoo Kula falsely claimed on TVC that Benue State is peaceful. Contrary to this claim, more than ten (10) local government areas across the state continue to experience severe insecurity, while the number of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) has significantly increased compared to what the administration inherited in 2023. The worsening humanitarian crisis has even compelled the government to establish additional IDP camps across the state.

‎Let it be clearly stated that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Benue State will not remain silent while Governor Hyacinth Alia continues to run the state into the ground despite receiving enormous allocations from FAAC and generating substantial IGR. Benue State cannot be governed like a secret cult where financial records and government activities are hidden from the people. Three years is more than enough for any serious administration to know its actual wage bill and make measurable progress in tackling insecurity.

‎We therefore challenge Tersoo Kula and the Alia administration to provide Benue people with a detailed account of how the over N1.2 trillion received from the Federal Government has been utilised, including how security votes have been spent in protecting lives and property, especially now that the Governor seeks a second term mandate.

‎The administration must also explain why, despite receiving over N1.2 trillion in federal allocations and internally generated revenue, it has proceeded to accumulate additional debts, including the reported N100 billion loan and other external borrowings.

‎Elections cannot be won through deception, propaganda, and falsehood. The people of Benue State deserve truth, transparency, security, and responsible governance.

Bright Yima Antyo
‎State Publicity Secretary
‎PDP, Benue State.
