Common House Sparrow
House sparrows are small birds commonly found in both Indian cities and villages. These petite and active creatures feed on small insects, worms, and grains. They prefer open spaces for nesting and foraging. However, due to rapid urbanization and the decline of open areas, these little birds have become difficult to spot in cities like Delhi.
To raise awareness about their declining population, former Chief Minister Mrs. Sheila Dixit declared the house sparrow as the state bird of Delhi. Additionally, March 20 is celebrated worldwide as World Sparrow Day to encourage people to protect these birds. House sparrows are an important part of our ecosystem, and conserving them is essential for maintaining ecological balance.
