**India Offers $1 Million Aid to Disaster-Hit Papua New Guinea**
The Government of India has announced a grant of $1 million in immediate assistance to Papua New Guinea, following a devastating flood and landslip that has claimed the lives of 2,000 people. This aid is part of India's support for relief, rehabilitation, and reconstruction efforts in the disaster-stricken region.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi previously expressed his condolences and pledged India's support. He stated, "Deeply saddened by the loss of lives and damage caused by the devastating landslip in Papua New Guinea. Our heartfelt condolences to the affected families and prayers for a speedy recovery of the injured. India is ready to offer all possible support and assistance."
Horrific images released by UNDP Papua New Guinea show the extent of the landslide in Yambali village, located in the Highlands of Papua New Guinea. The situation became critical on May 24 when a massive landslip buried nearly 2,000 people. Rescue operations are currently underway.
The Ministry of External Affairs issued a statement, saying, “As a close friend and partner under the Forum for India-Pacific Islands Cooperation (FIPIC) and as a gesture of solidarity with the friendly people of Papua New Guinea, the Government of India extends an immediate relief assistance of $1 million to support relief, rehabilitation, and reconstruction efforts.”
Prime Minister Modi visited Papua New Guinea in May of the previous year. India has a history of supporting Papua New Guinea, providing aid following an earthquake in 2018 and during volcanic eruptions in 2019 and 2023.
