Pledge for Patient Safety has been taken under the Leadership of Dr.Monika Rana, Director, DFW on the occasion of World Patient Safety Day. Staff members of Directorate of Family Welfare & Delhi State Health Mission were present to participate in the ceremony.

Dear All,

All of us are too aware that unintentional but avoidable harm to the patients takes place while receiving care within the health facilities and domiciliary settings. Common instances of such harm are medication errors, hospital-acquired infections, mishaps during the procedures, post-surgery complications, patient fall, decubitus ulcers (bed sores), deep vein thrombosis, excess radiation exposure, etc. Estimates show that in developed countries as many as 1 in 10 patients have been exposed to such situations. In India, it is also estimated that 12 per cent of hospitalized patients experience adverse events.

During the last couple of years, Patient Safety has come to the forefront of the Global Health Agenda, more so, after the adoption of a resolution ‘Global action on patient safety (WHA72.6) in May 2019 by the World Health Assembly. The member states were requested to give priority to patient safety as an essential foundational step in building, designing, operating and evaluating the performance of the health care systems. It was also decided to observe World Patient Safety Day (WPSD) on 17th September every year.

This year’s theme on World Patient Safety Day is “Safety in Maternal and Newborn care”.

The MOHFW has advised all the states and UTs to observe “Patient Safety Week” from 11th Sep 2021 to 16th Sep 2021, which culminates into a National event on 17th Sep 2021, when Quality certification initiative for Paediatric Care services, ‘MusQan’, and revised QA Operational Guidelines would be launched along with ‘Quality Darpan’, a 6-monthly update on the health quality in the country. Hon’ble HFM has kindly consented to be the Chief Guest and MOS as Guest of Honour in the function on 17th Sep 2021. It is also planned to recognise the states and UTs, showing exemplary performances in NQAS and LaQshya certifications, during the function. This will be followed by a Webinar on ‘Patient Safety.

Inappropriate management of Biomedical Waste and Infection Control Practices at COVID facilities, such COVID care Centre (CCC), Dedicated COVID Health Centre (DCHC) and Dedicated COVID Hospital (DCH) and even in homecare settings remain a challenge, more so in those facilities not yet linked with the Common waste treatment facilities (CWTFs).

Compliance to BMWM Rules is a statutory and legal requirement and mandatory for all public and private health facilities. Untreated Healthcare is a potential source of infection.

To discuss the issues and challenges in the current COVID scenario, a webinar is being organised on Friday, 25th June 2021. Professor Malini R Capoor, Prof of Microbiology and I/C BMW Cell at Vardhman Mahavir Medical College and Safdarjung Hospital has been invited to deliver a lecture on ‘’Managing waste during COVID-19 pandemic- Domiciliary and Institutional Care’’. Prof Capoor is a subject matter expert of Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) and NGT.

Registration for the event would begin at 2:00 PM on 25th June 2021. Maj Gen (Prof) Atul Kotwal SM, VSM, ED NHSRC has kindly consented to deliver the inaugural address.
