The Nehru Memorial Museum & Library (NMML) established in the memory of Jawaharlal Nehru (1889 - 1964) is an autonomous institution under the Ministry of Culture, Government of India. Located in the majestic Teen Murti House, the official residence of the first Prime Minister of India, it has four major constituents namely, a Memorial Museum, a Library on modern India, a Centre for Contemporary and Nehru Planetarium.
Museum
The Museum at Teen Murti House has been primarily developed as a personalia museum. Some of the rooms, such as the bedroom, the drawing room and the study have been preserved as they were at the time of Jawaharlal Nehru’s death.
The Museum portrays through visual media the life and work of a heroic individual, who was the leader of India’s struggle for freedom, the architect of modern India, and a passionate champion of world peace. It gives an intimate glimpse of Nehru’s rich and complex personality; the radical nationalist and world statesman; the scholar, idealist and historian; the man of strong family affections, who also bestowed his love on the common people of India. The Museum is not only a place where people come to pay homage to the departed leader; it also tells them of his achievements and highlights the ideals cherished by him.
Library
The NMML also houses a specialized Library which has been designed and developed as a specific research and reference centre on colonial and post-colonial India with its very rich and varied collection of books, journals, photographs and other resource materials on microfilm file.
Open to bonafide researchers on payment of a nominal fee, the Library offers valuable opportunities for doing advanced research and reference work on social sciences, with an emphasis on modern Indian history.
Nehru Planetarium
Since its inception, the Nehru Planetarium has been playing a seminal role in disseminating knowledge about celestial space sciences and promoting education in astronomy. With a view to bringing its equipment and infrastructure at par with other planetariums in the world the Nehru Planetarium was modernized by installing a Hybrid Projector in the year 2010. With its various innovative and informative shows like ‘Ultimate Universe', 'New Solar System' and ‘Astronaut’, it enlightens its visitors about the mysteries of the sky. The planetarium is amongst the few in the world, which has frequently updated full dome shows, which have been created completely in-house.
