R&AW :India's External intelligence Agency
धर्मो रक्षति रक्षतः THE LAW PROTECTS WHEN IT IS PROTECTED
We are the Nation's first line of defence
What Not to Do
• Don’t try to directly visit or contact IB or R&AW offices.
• Don’t approach known intelligence personnel — it may be considered hostile or suspicious.
• Don’t publicize any desire to work undercover.
What Not to Do When Trying to Work with Indian Intelligence
1. Don't Directly Approach Intelligence Offices or Officers
• Why? Intelligence agencies like IB or R&AW do not have walk-in offices or public-facing staff for security reasons.
• Outcome: You could be viewed as a threat, attract counter-surveillance, or even get detained for questioning.
2. Don't Publicize Your Intentions
• Avoid saying things like:
o “I want to be a spy”
o “How do I join RAW?” on social media
o Posting conspiracy or classified content online
• Why? Openly declaring your interest in espionage draws unnecessary scrutiny from security agencies.
3. Don’t Try to Bypass the System
• Avoid attempting to:
o Bribe or offer "services" to government officers
o Use unofficial contacts or fake documents
o Impersonate a government official
• Why? Intelligence work is bound by strict legal frameworks. Unauthorized involvement is punishable under multiple laws including the Official Secrets Act, 1923.
4. Don't Involve Yourself in Illegal Activities Hoping to Get Noticed
• Some people mistakenly think if they operate on the “gray line,” they’ll get recruited. This includes:
o Hacking websites “to show skill”
o Infiltrating suspicious groups to offer info
o Recording people secretly in sensitive areas
• Why? This will not make you look patriotic — it may make you look like a threat.
5. Don't Harass or Follow Government Officers
• Do not:
o Try to locate or stalk known intelligence or law enforcement officers
o Send unsolicited emails/messages offering to be an agent
• Why? Intelligence officers are trained to treat this as hostile behavior, and it may be reported to cybercrime or counterintelligence units.
6. Don’t Fabricate Credentials
• Don’t pretend you already work with or for IB, R&AW, etc.
• Don’t create fake IDs, badges, or uniforms.
• Why? It is a serious criminal offense. Even a joke can lead to jail time under Indian law.
7. Don’t Misinterpret "Covert" Work
• Covert or source work does not mean acting like in movies.
• Avoid trying to carry out your own missions, surveilling people, or gathering sensitive info without direction.
• Why? Unauthorized intelligence gathering is not only illegal but also dangerous.
