The current minimum EPFO pension of ₹1000 per month is not just inadequate—it is unjust in today’s era of soaring inflation and rising cost of basic necessities. For millions of workers from the non-formal and unorganized sectors—who form more than 70% of our workforce and have spent their entire lives contributing to the nation’s growth—this amount fails to ensure even a life of basic dignity after retirement.

It is deeply concerning that those who have built the backbone of our economy are left struggling in their old age. A humane and progressive society cannot overlook the hardships of its elderly workforce. The time has come to acknowledge their contribution with fairness and respect.

We strongly urge the Government to take immediate and decisive action to revise the minimum pension to a realistic and livable amount. This is not merely a financial adjustment—it is a moral responsibility and a crucial step towards social justice, dignity, and inclusive welfare. Ensuring a higher pension for these workers will reaffirm our collective commitment to protecting the most vulnerable and honouring those who have tirelessly served the nation.

INTRODUCTION

The pension given by Employees’ Provident Fund Organization under EPS-95 is miserably low. The minimum pension amount is Rs 1000/-and the maximum amount is Rs 7500/-. The fraction of pensioners getting maximum pension is very small. Despite the voice raised by the pensioners from the private sector including the NGOs to increase the amount of pension, there has been no change. Imagine how any person can lead the life with this meagre amount of Rs 1000. It is pertinent to mention that the Government is taking care of the government retirees very well by giving them good pension-amounts which keep on increasing. Why is Government not considering the welfare of the pensioners from Private Sector? The private sector makes significant contribution to the country’s economic and social development. It should be borne in mind that the share of senior citizens in voting age population in India is about 16 percent. A large part of this voting population is from private sector, including NGOs. The Government is requested to look into the matter and increase the amount of pension under EPS-95
