It is a matter of great pride for Karbi Anglong District that the inaugural issue of Adi Darpan, the monthly news digest of the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, has featured the significant role played by Hongpharlas—traditional Karbi village meeting spaces—in the social and community life of Karbi society, and their transformation into Adi Sewa Kendras.

Envisioned as accessible community platforms, Adi Sewa Kendras seek to bridge the gap between people and government programmes and services, while making governance more culturally rooted, participatory and locally accessible.
The feature highlights the case of witch-hunting at Sikari Hanse village, which was addressed and resolved through meaningful dialogue at the Harlongphar. The platform brought together the village community, District Administration, block-level officials, community leaders, youth and local organisations to promote rational thinking, scientific temperament and social responsibility.

The initiative is a strong example of how traditional community institutions can be meaningfully integrated with modern governance to foster inclusive, responsive and culturally sensitive administration, of which the functioning of Hongpharlas also as Adi Sewa Kendras is an example.
