Mary Kom’s recent comments about her former husband, K Onler Kom, have brought renewed attention to the couple’s troubled marriage and the different versions of their relationship. Speaking about their personal life, Mary questioned the idea that Onler had made major sacrifices for her career. She said that when they got married, he was not earning and claimed that he had not earned “a single rupee.” She also questioned his career, saying he used to play football in the streets and asking what successful career he had.
Mary also claimed that she was the main earning member of the family while she concentrated on her boxing career. She alleged that she later discovered financial problems involving her accounts and accused Onler of using money that she had earned through boxing. These were Mary’s allegations and have not been established as facts by the reports cited here.
Onler gave a very different account. He said he was a contracted football player with Shillong’s Excise and Customs department and was also preparing for the UPSC examinations. According to him, he gave up his career after Mary asked him to support her boxing ambitions. He said he stayed at home, raised their children, cooked, drove her and managed the household while she travelled for competitions. He described their marriage as having roles that were different from traditional expectations.
The controversy became larger after Mary’s comments went viral. In February 2026, she publicly apologised and clarified that her remarks were made during an emotionally difficult moment. She said her comments were connected to her personal conflict with Onler and were not intended to insult footballers, men generally or the football community. She also said that their marriage had been good for many years before trust broke down.
The dispute therefore involves two sharply different accounts of their marriage, finances and Onler’s role. Public statements from either side alone do not establish every allegation as fact.
