Wetlands are more than landscapes; they are lifelines.
The Asian Waterbird Census (AWC) 2026 is being conducted to systematically monitor waterbird populations and assess the ecological health of Assam’s wetlands, especially those lying outside Protected Areas. The data generated through this exercise supports long-term conservation planning and strengthens wetland management efforts at both state and national levels.

This census is being carried out by the Assam State Biodiversity Board in collaboration with the Forest Department, with active involvement of local stakeholders through Biodiversity Management Committees (BMCs), recognising the critical role of communities in monitoring and conserving waterbirds and their habitats, let's join hands as we count, document and celebrate Assam’s rich waterbird diversity across some of its important wetlands falling outside Protected Areas.

Survey Locations & Dates
Maguri – 18th January
Kokilamukh–Jhanjimukh – 19th January
Urpad Beel – 30th January
Tamranga Beel – 31st January

Interested volunteers may register by contacting Dr. Mazedul Islam (Assam State Biodiversity Board) at 9954248197, at least one day prior to the respective survey date.

In earlier times, Soklongtar played a vital role in sustaining the people of Dokmoka. Poor farmers would collect small quantities of rice seeds from the hill and plant them in their own fields to ensure a good harvest. Once their crops matured, they would return an equal portion of rice back to the hill. Well-to-do farmers followed the same practice, using the seeds to expand their farming always giving back what they had taken.

This cycle of taking only what was needed and returning with gratitude reflects a powerful system where faith, fairness, and ecology worked together.

Because of this belief, Soklongtar remains deeply sacred. Every harvest season, the community gathers to worship the hill, offering thanks and reaffirming a timeless relationship between nature, belief, and livelihood.

A reminder that for many cultures, landscapes are not just landforms but living partners in survival.
