When conversations around women’s safety come up, CCTV cameras are often suggested as the solution. The assumption is that more surveillance will automatically make public spaces safer.
In the article “Are CCTV cameras the answer to women’s safety in Delhi?”, Kalpana Viswanath stresses that CCTV cameras have a limited role. They may help establish what happened after an incident, but they do not prevent harm on their own. And for many women, the presence of a camera does not necessarily change how safe a street feels.
What shapes safety more strongly is the everyday experience of public spaces. Factors like adequate lighting, visible support systems, and streets that feel active and responsive play a far greater role in whether women feel safe.
Safety cannot depend on surveillance alone. It is built through how public spaces function day to day, long before anything goes wrong.

Recent deaths caused by open pits and unsafe street conditions have raised questions about how cities identify and respond to everyday civic risks.
In the article “After deaths in Delhi, Noida due to civic neglect, can citizen audits make cities safer?”, Kalpana Viswanath explains that citizen-led safety audits help surface risks that often go unnoticed in public spaces. While Safetipin’s audits focus on aspects such as lighting, visibility and access to public transport, they also record issues related to footpaths and street conditions. She notes that this approach can be extended to include wider civic hazards like open pits and potholes.
Kalpana also highlights that city responses to this vary. While some authorities have acted on audit findings, others have not. According to her, the larger gap lies in the absence of a formal, institutional process that requires authorities to engage with citizen-generated data and act on it.
She further points out that grievance apps alone cannot prevent harm unless they are integrated into civic systems, backed by accountability, and supported by enforceable protocols. Without institutional mechanisms that require authorities to act, reporting risks remains reactive rather than preventive.

As comes to an end, it’s an important moment to pause and think about how much design affects safety on our streets.
Road safety is shaped every day through things we often overlook: clear signage, visible road markings, well-lit streets, continuous footpaths, and safe pedestrian crossings. These elements guide movement, reduce risk, and make it easier for people to move through cities safely.
At Safetipin, we believe in safer-by-design streets that support safer mobility for everyone. When infrastructure is planned with care-ethics and inclusivity, safety becomes an integral part of everyday work.

This National Youth Day, we celebrate the voices, and leadership of young people across the nation.
As part of Safetipin’s initiative, ‘Cities for Youth’ young people in Alwar, Rajasthan assessed their cities to collect data on safety using the My Safetipin app. They walked the routes they travel every day, captured what supports their safety, and highlighted what still needs to change. Their effort reminds us how youth participation can actively shape safer, more inclusive cities.
Here’s to the young people who show up with curiosity and confidence, who ignite change within themselves and inspire change around them.

Safety at its core is much more than just security. It is not surveillance, and it is not protection. It’s the freedom to move through public spaces without fear or hesitation.
In conversation with The Human City Podcast, Dr. Kalpana Viswanath highlights that by investing in surveillance and policing, we’re losing something important, the everyday presence of people in public spaces that makes them safer to use.

Safetipin conducted a city-wide safety audit assessment of in partnership with Gurugram Police and the findings are being used to boost women’s safety.
Our study identified gaps in public infrastructure that influence women’s safety and mobility such as lighting, visibility, crowd presence, and the functioning of helplines. We provided actionable recommendations and now there will be another round of audits to measure the interventions.
We are happy to have partnered with Gurugram Police on this study and are committed to building safer and more inclusive cities for women.
