Khudiram Bose: The Smile of a Martyr

Remembering the Great Revolutionary on his Martyrdom Day - 11th August

Khudiram Bose’s life was a testament to the power of a single, defiant spirit. Born into a childhood shadowed by hardship, he was a boy who grew up far too fast. After losing both parents by the age of seven, he was raised by his sister, carrying with him the memory of a traditional custom that had symbolically "saved" him from death—being sold for a handful of grain, earning him the name Khudiram. This adversity didn't break him; it forged a revolutionary. Even as a teenager, his defiance was clear. He was arrested at just 15 for distributing anti-British pamphlets and reportedly struck a policeman who tried to stop him, shouting "Vande Mataram!" as he escaped.

His ultimate act of defiance was the Muzaffarpur bombing in 1908. In a tragic twist of fate, the bomb meant for a British judge killed two innocent women instead. With his partner Prafulla Chaki dead, Khudiram was left to face the trial alone. His defense team, a group of dedicated lawyers who worked for free, fought to save him. But the British Empire was determined to make an example of the boy who dared to challenge its rule. The judge delivered the death sentence.
Instead of fear or despair, Khudiram’s face held a serene smile. A stunned judge asked if he understood the sentence, and Khudiram calmly affirmed that he did. When asked if he had any last words, the young man, with that same astonishing smile, offered to teach the judge how to make bombs if given the chance. His courage was so profound it left his captors speechless.

Khudiram was just 18 years old when he walked to the gallows.
On August 11, the area around the prison was packed with a swelling crowd long before the scheduled ex*****on time of 6 a.m. People held flower garlands, ready to pay their respects.

Upendranath Sen, a lawyer and journalist for the Bengali newspaper "Bengali," arrived at 5 a.m. with funerary arrangements. Following the hanging, a funeral procession moved through Calcutta, with police struggling to hold back the crowds who showered flowers upon the body as the carriage passed.

The Amrita Bazar Patrika, a prominent daily, carried the story the next day under the headline, "Khudiram's End: Died cheerful and smiling." The article described how he "walked to the gallows firmly and cheerfully and even smiled when the cap was drawn over his head." The British newspaper The Empire also reported on his courage, stating that he "mounted the scaffold with his body erect. He was cheerful and smiling." Poet Pitambara Das later penned a poem in his honor, cementing Khudiram Bose's legacy as a hero and a martyr for India's independence.

His sacrifice sent shockwaves across India, inspiring a new generation of freedom fighters, including leaders like Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. Netaji himself acknowledged that while freedom wouldn't be won by bombs alone, the acts of revolutionaries like Khudiram woke a sleeping nation from its slumber, giving a subjugated people the courage to stand up and reclaim their identity. Khudiram's life proved that a single act of fearless self-sacrifice could ignite the soul of a nation.

History has taught us that whenever society has faced a profound crisis, organised mass movements have been the ones to pave the path for change. With this objective in mind, a National Convention is being organised on 24th July, 2026 at Hyderabad under the initiative of AIDSO to address the increasing atrocities against women and children as well as the attacks on the education sector at large. As part of this effort, campaigning was done across the HCU campus with an appeal to come forward and strengthen this struggle. We call upon you to participate actively in the convention, lend your voice, and raise the slogan 'Save Education, Culture, and Humanity.'

"...It is 1924. Now when I remember Amir Chand, Abadhbehari, Basanta Kumar, Balmukunda, Pingle, Kartar Singh, Mathur Singh, Bhagat Singh, Nidhan Singh and others, I cannot but weep bitterly. Why do I behave so? They are not my relatives. Then do I cry for them? They are more than my relatives, they are my dear brethren. So I pine for them. Their memory aches me severely. The communities cannot realise the deep-rooted love in the heart of the revolutionaries for each of them. This love is greater than that for their own fathers, mothers, brothers and friends. Without this love, none can be a revolutionary and achieve any revolutionary task."

Rasbehari Bose

-----------------------------
