The final frontier of Indian tourism, virginal Arunachal Pradesh shows up as a giant patch of unexplored green on the country’s map. India’s wildest and least explored state, Arunachal (literally the ‘Land of Dawn-lit Mountains’) rises abruptly from the Assam plains as a mass of densely forested, and impossibly steep, hills, which eventually top off as snow-capped peaks along the Tibetan border. Home to 26 indigenous tribes, Arunachal is perhaps the last sanctuary for India’s natural and anthropological heritage. Much of the state still remains beyond tourism’s reach, but new areas (comprising lush river gorges and craggy mountainscapes) are slowly being opened to visitors.

The Mobile Folklorists, Jim Ankan Deka and Tse Ring La, travelled to Manmao village in Arunachal Pradesh to meet Lungkhum Lungtu Mossang, one of the few remaining singers who knows the traditional Tangsa folk song “Sawi.”

Sung as a prayer for good luck and a bountiful harvest, “Sawi” carries a fascinating tradition. When the song is performed at a family's home, a cockscomb flower is placed as part of the ritual. According to the tradition, as the prayer continues, sometimes for hours, the flower begins to move as though responding to the song. This is regarded as a sign of good luck for the family.

In an effort to document this rare and fading tradition, The Mobile Folklorists recorded “Sawi” live in a paddy field in Manmao, preserving not only the song but also the cultural memory and beliefs surrounding it. This recording offers a glimpse into a living Tangsa tradition that continues to survive through the few remaining bearers of this musical heritage.

Special thanks to: HMLA Laisam Simai, ADC Lekhandu Thungon & the people of Manmao village.

Vocals: L Lungtu Mossang
Music: Jim Ankan Deka
Video: Tse Ring La
Assisted by: Bullo Tunu
