What did Forest Minister Mr. Arjun Modhwadia say? Regarding killing of a young man by a lion,
A tragic incident occurred near Antaliya village in Liliya taluka of Amreli district, Gujarat, where 21-year-old Sohil Munjavar lost his life in a lion attack. The incident took place near the Luwariya Reserve Forest, once again raising serious concerns over the increasing human-lion conflict in the Gir landscape.
Reacting to the incident, Gujarat Forest and Environment Minister Arjun Modhwadia released a video statement on X (formerly Twitter). He said that, according to preliminary information, three youths had allegedly entered the reserve forest area for an illegal lion show. Initial findings suggest that the lions were in their mating period, and cubs were also present nearby. It is suspected that the lions may have attacked after being disturbed or provoked. However, he emphasized that a detailed investigation is underway and the exact cause will be established only after the inquiry is completed.
The minister further stated that the male lion involved in the incident has been rescued, and forest officials are questioning the victim's companions. Authorities are investigating every aspect of the case, including what exactly happened at the scene and whether any wildlife laws were violated.
As part of the investigation, the Forest Department has seized the mobile phones of the deceased and his companions. Officials will examine photos, videos, location history, and other digital evidence to reconstruct the sequence of events.
The Forest Department has appealed to the public not to disturb, provoke, or approach lions for photographs or illegal wildlife viewing. Such acts are punishable offences under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, and strict legal action will be taken against anyone found violating the law.
