e name. Mallikarjuna Temple, Adur Temple, Ananthapura Lake Temple are some of the famous temples in Kasargod. The land is rich with greenery and 12 rivers are flowing through Kasargod, which includes the smallest river in Kerala, Manjeshwar River (16 kms). Kasargod has contributed many famous personalities to the nation which includes Rashtra Kavi Manjeshwar Govinda Pai, famous Malayalam Poet P Kunhiraman Nair and so on. Kerala’s first Chief Minister E M S Namboothirippadu represented Neeleshwaram constituency of Kasargod. Opposition Leader of the first Lok Sabha and famous Communist leader A K Gopalan was elected from Kasargod. The birthplace of Yakshagana is also a place rich in confluence of different cultures and rituals. The youngest district in Kerala has already achieved many milestones in its way to progress. Kerala government announced a special tourism project to Bekal Fort and other tourist destinations in the district. The project aims at exploiting the huge tourism potential of the region. The plan includes making Bekal the second biggest backwater tourism hotspot after Alappuzha (southern Kerala), building an airstrip and revamping the railway station to improve connectivity and creating facilities for adventure activities including water sports and aero sports. The district Panchayat won the Nirmal Gram Puraskar last year for their systematic work to bring cleanliness in the district. Curse of Kasargod

Kasargod grabbed the spot of world wide attention 13 years back for a wrong reason. In 1999, it was found that the use of Endosulfan in the plantations in the district resulted in serious physical as well as mental health issues to the people in the region. Children were born with permanent disabilities and many died a slow death while many others continue to die due to the ill-effects of Endosulfan. In 2000, the first protest against Endosulfan spraying was staged which heralded a historical protest against the pesticide giant. The waves of protests spread to other parts of the region too. However, the mark of the disaster still lies in this land.
