In August 1947, Bengal and Calcutta were still suffering from severe communal violence associated with Partition. Gandhi had initially intended to proceed towards Noakhali, but decided to remain in Calcutta and work for peace.

On 13 August 1947, Gandhi moved into Hyderi Manzil in Beliaghata. The location was significant because the surrounding area had experienced intense Hindu-Muslim tensions.
